Default Harmonic Balancer Bolt

Quick question, relating to my other thread but I decided this warranted its own thread for future searching purposes. Autozone didn't carry the LS1 harmonic balancer bolt, but they had one for just "Small Block Chevy"
I'm assuming this is for the old generation GM engines, but are the bolts any different/interchangeable?

Dont think they will. The GM bolt is only about 5 bucks but it is a one time use bolt.ARP is the best way to go.Its kinda high but can be reused mine was about 27 dollars.

No other NON LS damper bolt will work. Its a unique LS series engine, one time use bolt. Available at the dealer or thru Gene Culley www.gmpartshouse.com

If I were you,,,I would install the ARP bolt!!! Its a stout piece and wont fail!

Crankshaft Balancer Bolt (Installation Pass-to Ensure the Balancer is Completely Installed) 240 lb ft

Crankshaft Balancer Bolt (First Pass-Install a NEW Bolt After the Installation Pass and Tighten as Described in the First and Final Passes) 37 lb ft

Crankshaft Balancer Bolt (Final Pass) 140 degrees

Use loctite on the new bolt, and get the new bolt from the dealer.

I have always heard not to use loctite. Is that just some more forum crap again?

Generally, if done correctly, the bolt should never back out.

That said, how many here have had bolts back out. Locktite will help with that.

The original bolt it a TORQUE-TO-YIELD bolt. The final sequence it to turn the bolt a certain # of degrees past the last torque setting. This STRETCHES the bolt to keep it n place so no loctitie is needed on a bolt like this. This is why you can't REUSE the bolt. A reusable aftermarket bolt is a different story

The service manual doesn't call for threadlock on this bolt. The GM bolt has a form of it on the back of the bolt. If you put threadlock on, it will keep it from coming out, ever. I made this error once, and yeah my bolt stayed in. Later, I had some work done and the shop spent hours trying to remove that bolt. It almost didn't come out... They had to chase the threads after, to get it all out. A new ARP bolt went in, and they call for anti sieze.
