Default Performance Mods

I have a 1998 corvette, currently in stock condition.

I understand that the 1998 ECU does not have the ability to take down loads. What performance modifications can I do to the car without changing over the computer?

I was thinking along the lines of bolt on intake parts and exhaust system. Do I need to go with the 1999 plus ECU?

Your PCM isnt a very fast computer.

With all the bolts ons, you be fine. You can even to a mild cam set up and not run into issues. When you start pushing your RWHP, the computer cant process as fast as other models and you have some drivablity issues.

You'll be ok with what you want to do

By "not have the ability to take down loads" you mean not able to be tuned for performance, no. Your PCM can be tuned to handle all the bolt ons and then some. Mainly the early model PCM's do not have as flexible VE tables. You can do up to and including heads/cam packages just fine.

Before you drop too much cash,,,list what your goals are and what you expect to purchase and you will get some valuable guidance.

There are some things that people will try to sell you that wont make any performance improvements. Dont fall into that trap.

There are also OTHER reliability things that you can and should install while your doing mods that will help you out down the road.

Get an intake and exhaust for a start...maybe a new Mass Air Flow housing (or descreen your stock one)...long tubes if you have some extra cash. You can always send your ECU in to get it tuned. Indy
