Default Installing CLB on a '97?

Hey Guys, this is my 1st post on CF, love the sight. My question is I recently purchased a '97 an wanted to install CLB. I've heard theres a chance that I might have issuses with it on the older vettes. I was interested on your thoughts on this install from all you experienced vette owners. Again love the sight and all the info. Thanks

Welcome to the Forum!
I installed a CLB from Corvettes of Houston about a week after I got my 98 Coupe, takes about 1/2 hour.
They supply pretty good instructions, but even without them it'd be hard to screw it up.
As far as I know, the only issue is if you wait too long and yours fails.
The CLB must be installed on a working column lock, but it's cheap insurance against getting stranded somewhere in your Vette.
I couldn't think of a "good" place for that to happen,so the CLB was my first mod.

I understand that the CLB may not work on some early C5s. It worked on my 1998. I would try it, if you don't have a CLB, it is only a matter of time until you are stuck.

If the CLB does not work, take out the lock plate and re-program the gas cutoff IF your C5 has the re-program.

Installed a Corvettes of Houston CLB on my early production 98 C5 after it stranded me. ZERO issues after the install!

Just follow the directions, use the power cable to retract the bolt and make sure that any of the GM installed cures (like the K harness ) are removed prior to installation of the Corvettes of Houston CLB.

I have a '97 as well. There was a recall for this issue. My car was at the dealership three times before they took care of the problem...all at their cost! I dont understand why you want to pay for something when GM will fix it for free.

Thanks for your responses.I guess its worth the try before it leaves me stranded. Will GM still honor the recall still on a 12 year old car. I'm not sure if it has already been done or not, will have to check first.

And all it took was 3 trips to the dealer?
That sounds much more convenient than spending $50 and half an hour doing it yourself...

Only thing you need to look for is a GM K Harness that may be installed between the Actuator ( Electric motor that operates the lock pin) and the BCM connector under the knee bolster on the drivers side. Here's a link to a pic of the K Harness:

http://forums.corvetteforum.com/show...ight=k+harness

It is usually tie wrapped to the column. If your car has one installed then you need to disconnect BOTH ends of the K Harness. ( You can leave it hanging there or cut the tie wrap and remove it completely) Then plug the CLB male connector into the female connector that had the K Harness male connector plugged into. If there is no K Harness then the install instructions describe the location of the Female connector that you need to look for. It will have the male connector of the actuator plugged in. Unplug the actuator male connector and plug in the CLB male connector.

The clear all errors that may be in the DIC and clear any DTC's that may have gotten set in the BCM. You can either remove fuse 25 in the passenger footwell for at least 10 minutes or I prefer to disconnect the neg battery cable for at least 10 minutes. Reassemble the knee bolster and your done. Most people can do it in about 30 minutes.

Here's a link to a pic of a CLB. Square box item is the CLB. The other is the cigarette lighter adapter that is used to retract the lock pin. If you can turn the wheel currently with NO key in the ignition, you do not need to use the adapter. Most likely you can because the GM recall service replaces the lock ring with a smaller lock ring with no holes for the lock pin to intercept on the A4 cars.

Thanks for all the helpful information I will give it a go.
