I have 150 miles on my new Z06. I actually purchased a CAGS eliminator prior to purchasing the car but have not installed it yet. The CAGS feature almost never activates which is not what I expected.
For example, I just took the car out for a 10 mile drive. Starting out the car was completely cold. I performed the 1-2 shift at low RPM (as low as 1200) trying to get the car to go 1-4. I did it many times as the car warmed up but it never activated.
I suppose I shouldn't complain but it seems like it is broken. It has activated a few times so I know what it feels like when it does.
Has anyone else experienced this? I also have never noticed the CAGS light which I believe to be somewhere on the instrument panel.
Check your manual - there are 3 conditions that have to be satisfied for it to kick in : The engine has to be warm - there is a specific temp, I forget, you have to be at less than around 20% throttle, and your speed less than 20 ish. I forget the exact specs, but like I said, it's all in the manual. For most driving, it should kick in pretty rarely. :seeya
The CAGS in my 95 Firebird used to drive me crazy (for a few weeks). Then I climbed under the car and unplugged it.
But on my 98 Vette, the CAGS pretty much never interferes. I can sometimes see the light go on, but seems to go off when I reach about 2800 RPM. And since I never shift that low, it does not effect my driving.
I thought this 'feature' was broken on my '02 coupe as well. Unfortunately, it works like a charm after the engine is warmed up. :cuss So now I rarely shift at low rpm's. :D
Brand new 2001 coupe here, but I cannot get Cags to prevent a shift no matter how I try! It just doesn't work on my stock car! I guess if you have to have a factory defect this is as good as it gets. 13000 miles now and still trying to feel what a prevented shift feels like.
From my '01 manual:
One to Four Shift Light
This light will come on when:
(1) The engine coolant temperature is higher thatn 169F (76C)
(2) you are going 15 to 19 mph
(3) you are at 21 percent throttle or less
I am happy with the CAGS eliminator. It always kicked in when I was making a turn and trying to just get out of first gear.
