Default intermitting start problems

Every once in a while I will start my 01 convertible 6 speed. When I turn the key all the gauges move like they should but when I turn it over I get nothing...no sounds at all and if I hold the key as if I was starting the car after about 30 or 40 seconds it will turn over. I have tried to let the clutch out and press it again and I can here it click. I also tried to start it in neutral. I have also wiped the resistor on the key. I have took it to the dealer and they couldn't find anything wrong because it started up every time they tried it. like I said it happens every once in a while. please any and all help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your help and time. p.s. the battery and alternator are about a year and a half old. I also took it to auto zone to check out the charging system they said its all ok.

Ive been down this road and fixed my issue as well as many here on the forum. The starter solenoid is a failure point and causes this very issue. Sounds like you have eliminated the clutch switch. The only other componet that can cause a simular issue id the Theth Deterrent Relay. My bet is the solenoid is bad! You have to remove the starter to replace it but it only $50. compared to hundreds for a new starter.

Don't even ask the dealer to change it cause they WONT! They will install a new starter for $400-500.

Change your starter solenoid and save your self some cash.

Do you think it would be a neutral safety switch? I pulled the starter but I couldn't find a solenoid from the parts store. So I bought a starter from ebay NEW not a referb for only 53.00. Auto zone wanted 174.00 for a referb and 196 for a new one. But the guy at auto zone told me about the switch but I thought they were only on automatics. The only bad thing is I have to wait about three days to get the starter. But hey I saved 120.00 plus. Thanks again.

Could very well be that switch but,,,,,,you already said that when you pressed and releaced the clutch,,,,,,you could hear the Theth Deterrent Relay (TDR) "CLICK". SO,,,,,,,,,,,,,,that tells me that,,,the netural safety switch and TDR are working. The TDR can still be bad so i would find the PURPLE wire off the relay and insure that you see 12 VDC on it when you have all the conditions to start the engine.

Check out the starting circuit and make sure you have ALL the signals and TDR solinoid output:

Well,,,,I thought I sent a post to explain that BUT,,,,something happened to it

YES! The ignition switch can and will do the same thing. If the contacts in the switch are burnt, it will not provide the current or voltage to the circuit necessare for it to function properly.

Heres a post to explain switch cleaning/repair that I posted a while back:

Default Bill your right again!!!

Sorry it took so long to respond with an answer as to the starter. I only drive my car on nice weekend days. But so far so good. I do thank you very much Bill. You know I cut open the solenoid and the contacts didn't look to be worn out, they weren't burnt or anything but hey I'm not complaining it starts up every time so far. Thanks Bill again.
