I've read alot of posts about failed oil pressure sensors and when the fail they peg at 80PSI. I belive mine has failed but it will bounce from 0-80 psi. IE it will be pegged at 80 then drop to 0 and stay there for some time then go back to 80 and repeat. Has anyone had this type of failure before with their oil sensor? With the key on engine off it will sweep then peg at 80 most of the time and on occasion will come back to 0. Car runs fine so it leads me to belive its an oil psi sensor failure.
Sounds like it, there should be NO pressure with the engine not running.
I never specifically heard of this type of failure, sounds like you have a loose connection also. Sometimes they leak oil and contaminate the connector, maybe that is breaking contact.
2 most important things when replacing sensor:
1) Clean all oil off of connector
2) ONLY torque to value, 15 ft-lbs, no more !
You can also remotely locate the sensor, so it is easier to replace next time, do a search.
Geez... I havn't been on this Forum in years. I had a 2000 C5.
I had three failures of the oil pressure sensor. They were the achillies heal of the electronics. When they fail they would "shunt" to 80 pounds. Chevy's price was $80 bucks, Pontiac on the other had had the same part for $30 bucks. I changed out 3 of them. I finally gave up and forgot about it!
ZOOOM
I went with the same procedure MARK C5 did, I cut the hole under the wiper cowl to get to it, it was pretty easy job. use teflon tape also, on the treads.

Just to be clear, I DID NOT cut a hole in my car. I removed the intake manifold.

I went with the same solution you did. I bought mine ready-made from a forum member (name escapes me for the moment) who was making that set-up as a kit. Believe it or not, the sender that I have on mine is an aluminum unit and it has been fine for the last 2 1/2 years.
