Default "floating" at high speed

Any experience this? last year my car seemed to be solid, but at 140mph today it seemed a bit light. maybe the 295's up front do it?

I run MT drag radials out back and supercars up front. Z sways and T1 shocks lowered on stock bolts

if I have my top down, and I go fast, I feel it. Floating, or light, or loose.

After the windshield, the air spools right on my trunk it feels like. Ive had mine at 143MPH on a closed course and although it felt like it was floating, it held steady

yes it does feel to float some when I am on a closed road course at higher speeds, but a lot seems to do with the track surface

plus alignment, tires and how much air is getting trapped under your hood.

the hood can act like a parachute at higher speeds.

Going to new stick tires, an agressive alignment will help reduce that float feel

I have a heat exractor hood, so air is vented. not sure on my alignment. My 295's would barely hit the inner fenderwell on sharp turns so I cut away a 2"x2" section so the tire wouldnt hit, Im sure that doesnt change anything.

it almost felt like the 1/4 mile with my slicks on. wide radials up front and slicks out back at 130+ feels quite uneasy

Had my Z up to 135+MPH (closed course of course) and it felt solid. What does the "float" feel like?

The "float" kinda reminds me of being on a boat... It literally feels like you are barely floating off the road surface.

My first Z went 160+ with no float, the only suspension mod was lowered on stock bolts.

Two different types of tires can do it for sure. I had mine do that with Nitto Z rated drag radials in back and Supercars in front. Just didn't feel planted a little nerve racking at high speed.

I have read the vented hoods are worse because of the way the air extracts around them. My understanding is they are more designed with a splitter up front and wing in the back.

On the track I run 315 all around. I have no float issue and I have been up to 176. I do have an aggressive alignment and dual rate coilovers with penske triple shocks which also help.

Prior to that setup at around 150+ with stock shocks and a somewhat aggressive street alignment it would start to get light out back.

An extractor hood works too.

and I have driven an Audi A6 at speeds above 120. No fricken way will I do that again. Too many electrical nannies and <koff> safety features going off. Car just did not like slight tire slide through high speed corners.

I had mine up to 187 mph and it was smooth with Pilot Sports all the way around and stock suspension. I about crapped myself when the wiper blades flew across the windshield to the full "open" position. It happened twice and I haven't visited that speed again since. If I do, I will be removing the wiper arms first. As I stated in a previous post, it is not uncommon for a car with two different brands/types of tires to have a nervous feel even at 70 to 80 mph.

MT DR's have a soft sidewall. Haven't you noticed how crappy they handle?

That's funny. I have to sets of OEM rear 18's. 305/18 MT DR's and 295/18 T1R's. It is night and day. The body roll on the MT's is bad.

well, i dont think that has to do with flat on straight speeds, but I have ran the t1r's as well and they were prob the best street tire ive had...body roll is less, but less grip in turns....just cant have best of both worlds on the street....siiiiiiigh

Default floating at high speed

1999 c-5 hardtop s/c 550hp 6-spd:
GYrunflat tires tenacious but at 187mph car rear end extremely light on road began to sway slightly shut it down. will not stick at high speed without rear wing for downforce. managable up to 165mph. sunny day ambient temp 72 degrees that day.
new tires, supercharger new and broken in that was a one time "lets see what she can do" very dangerous wont do it again.
