Harmonic balancer movement
Hi guys, I turned my air on for the first time since I bought my '03 today. The car at idle would sometimes have a quick vibration throughout the car. Not very often but enough to make me wonder what it is. When I pulled it in the garage it stumbled a little then I heard a squeak from the engine compartment. When I opened the hood I noticed that the bottom pulley moves quite a bit. Is this normal? I never noticed it in my '01 SS (pulley movement or vibration). Any ideas on the shutter? My '87 IROC did this (vibration) and the dealership alwys said it was normal.

It sounds like your balancer is starting to go. If you can, jack up the front and check the rubber dampner. I had mine replaced last week because there was a 5" section of the rubber completely gone.
You might also check the tightness of the bolt.

The OEM damper is made in TWO parts. The HUB and the outer ring. There bonded together with a vulcanized rubber ring. If the rubber deteriorates, becomes unbonded or falls out, the outer ring can wobble or slide off (forward or aft)

For a different perspective: mine wobbles - since I got it 105,000 miles ago. Never got worse or better. Just seems to be a lousy design to start with. It's still on the car and it does see occasional track days.
