Maf
I'm told that minimal to no gain...by descreeninig my MAF, Only a Z06 maf would provide any gain's.
Opinons please as Id like to think that I got ALL the relative parts to do my conversion in hope to get the most out of it, from recommendations I got from this forum for the better part of the last 6 months.
Opinions please.
The gains are minimal at 5 hp or less for the LS6 (with the 2002-2004 Z06 air box) so the LS1 with the same Z06 air box would also have gains and even more with an unrestricted aftermarket filter system.
Since I have a after market air filter it would be minimal gain.
Might consider porting the body too, if it is an older style you can remove the bolts and take it apart. Cut out the metal bars in the middle. If you can, get it on a metal lathe and bore it out to max ID; trim down the plastic on the sensor.
The Z06 didn't need the screen because the airflow didn't need to be straightened for an accurate flow determination. Leaving the screen off the Z06 MAF saved GM a few pennies per unit.
The only way you would see a horsepower increase from a descreened MAF would be if you are at a HP level that you need to take in more air than the MAF will allow. I have a screened MAF in an LS setup putting about 500 to the wheels NA. It's breathing just fine.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

It is very clearly explained why the GMPT engineers eliminated the MAF straightener screen from the 2002-2004 LS6 . I also state why the 2001 LS6 has a screened MAF and by eliminating the no longer needed screen from the 2001 LS6 and the addition of the 2002- larger opening filter box lid , one could expect an additional 5 hp. I also quote my sources. GMPT engineers admit they overlooked this for the first M/Y LS6.
Let me quote some other facts:" Two MAFs , 2001 LS6 and 2002 LS6. GM has done this ( descreen) for 2002 ought to prompt the folks who've yet to do it to older GEN 3s to remove their screens. Removing their screen and using the 2002-2004 Z06 air filter box together gets about 5 hp at flow levels such as the LS6es" . John Juriga, Asst Chief Engineer for GEN 3 engines.
The point being is that the screen is Restricive to air flow. Just as any practice that allows increased air flow in or out of and engine will equal a hp gain. Now who am I going to believe you or GM engineers?
John goes on to say" GM did what hot rodders have been doing for years with MAFs- remove the air flow straightener or "screen". What took us so long to figure that out? The LS6 is not GM's only application of the MAFs. Any use of it with an air intake duct that curves just before the MAF (typical of most trucks) needs the straighten screen to sense accurately and GM's conventional wisdom was to leave it on Corvettes ...... With Corvettes (2002-) relatively straight passage between air filter box and the MAF, the straightener isn't needed."
Note that 2005 LS2 uses a straightener screen on the MAF. GM states that horsepower was no longer the number one issue but that driveability was priority.
