Default Alternator issue

I read the sticky up top and my instance seems to be a litte different.

I was getting the charging fault code so I got a new battery and a new alternator. The charging faut code has gone but the new setup will ony charge 11.0 volts when driving with the lights off and about 10.4 with the lights off.

I have checked the wires the grounds and all seems fine.

QUESTION:

I know it may be a NO NO but what if I unhooked the battery wire from the harness to the aternator and jumpered one from the back of the aternator to the positive on the battery to see if the voltage jumps up. New terminals cleaned a few grounds and now my gas guage appears to work (thanks to the sticky above) However the charging is a tad bit low.

HA! You fell ino the TRAP! Spending cash on an un-needed part.

Try this:

Connect a 10ga wire from the POSITIVE battery terminal to the BATT Terminal on the back of the Altenator (ubder the black boot) and see if you get NORMAL charging system voltages ( 13.5 14.7 VDC)

If the jumper wire helps,,,,,let me know!

Default Bill

Should I disconnect the original wire when doing this or leave it there as well?

No,, Just temporarily attach the jumper and see if it resolves the issue.

Default Wheres your cape Bill?

At first I had a smaller guage going from the battery to the alt ONLY. 11.2 volts was the max then but it was always available. No more going down to 9 volts or lower. Today I hooked the OLD wire up along with the larger guage jumper and instantly 13 volts. Ill take it for a drive to see if it gets around 13.5 regardless thanks and what do you think the real issue is? I am thinking there is a short on those 1 7/8" headers somewhere I cant see from the top.

However my gas guage went back to reading something different everytime I crank up, also it wont let me put more than half a tank of gas in TOPS! I must barely pump the gas preiod or it backs up in the pump handle and cuts off like its full so it takes me a helluva long time to pump gas. If I pull the trigger on the pump to pump fast it shuts off. Now has ANYONE ever heard of That problem?

When you say the word "SHORT" the image of smoke and flames should come to mind. It would not be a short. Most likely a poor/corroded connection or a damaged wire. The ALT terminal goes down to the starter solenoid thru a fuse (in-line) and then up to the battery, That connection is usually the issue:
