Default output shaft seal replacement

my Z has just over 12k on it, and it looks like i have the output shaft leak that so many others have had.

I'd like to attempt fixing this myself. From the looks of some of the posts it doesn't look to be too difficult.

Once i have everything apart and the axle removed, does the seal just pull out, and the new one push into place?

can anyone comment on the accuracy of this DIY?

thanks

Yes, the seal is not that hard to get out. However, I pulled the drivers side side cover as well. There is an issue with the o'ring on the cover seal area. I replaced that while I had the unit apart. This allowed me to remove the drivers side seal with the cover off the car making it much easier to get at.

The Cajundude write up is great. It doesn't show in picture how limited room you have in there to accomplish this job. The article doesn't reccomend any sealant inbetween seal & diff case. I've been informed by a known Vette shop, & Vette race team out of Texas, to use a gray RTV sealant in this area. They haven't had any return leaks using that method. As mentioned by Erric D, it may be better to pull the side cover if you think it may be leaking from that area and do the seal replacement on the bench. You will also need to buy a new o ring if you decide to go that route. Good luck.

is it necessary to compress or remove the rear spring for this job? i think i would do the seal and the O-ring when i pull the cover.
Eric D i stumbled accross your post where you did this on your car. looks like you have to remove just about everything to get that cover off.

Use the Cajun Dude DIY instructions. It will get you to where you need to be in order to accomplish the job. No you don't need to compress or remove the rear spring. The best thing you can do for yourself is to buy the 3 volumn set of service manuals for your particular car. By doing this one job by yourself would pay for the set. Good luck.
