Default Overheating.. need help

My 97 suddenly started running hot and boiling off coolant. Fans run temps get as high as 235.

Fans are running like they should.

I Noticed coolant coming out of both the reesivor nipple connection and the radiator cap (that i tighened that morning)

would these 2 joints cause my overheating due to a lack of pressure?

Probably need a new surge tank cap. The newer version will be an 18 PSI cap, some of the older models used 15 PSI caps. The newer cap doesn't sit down flush on the surge tank as the older style did but it is still the correct revised cap from GM.

There is a valve in the cap that is suppose burp off pressure and be a relief.

Oh be sure to follow the procedure to burp the system of air. Do a search there are several post here with those steps. A sealed system with air will not function properly.

Most common cause of overheating is trash up in the radiator cavity. These cars are bottom breathers and collect a huge amount of crap up there. Vacuum out the area thoroughly, also check between the condensor and the radiator. It helps to get a compressed air nozzle and reverse blow from the inside. What is status of coolent - how long since it was changed ?? Is it still a nice clear orange or has color changed indicating contamination. If so, you need to check thermostat operation and possibly replace. Previous posts on cap and burping are also necessary checks.

well I manged to coax it back home this evening with the windows down and heat blasting. Temps hovered around 200 on an 80 degree night. This leads me to believe the thermostat may be dying or dead.

....opprotunity to upgrade to a 180 tstat

If the cooling system is not properly purged it will overheat within minutes.

Some folks will tell you to go to a 160 stat.

If you raise the front end and go underneath with a flashlight examine the area inbetween the condenser and radiator. You may find a ton of debris in there. How it gets between those two is a brain challenge. If so you'll need to remove the top housing try to get between them, be very careful not to damage the fins. Of course at that age, '97, it nay just need a new radiator.

Personally I don't think it is related to the tstat. But I could be wrong.

You did good! Was the motor warm/hot when you broke that bolt off? Glad your back on the road again.

Motor was cold for 24 hours. Hadn't tested it for sealing yet.
