Hey guys,
I recently replaced my diff with a new one and everything went well but I have a question about putting the axles back into the diff. The driver's side seems to not slide in quite as far as the passenger side. There is roughly 3/8" of gap between the diff housing and the CV housing on the driver's side, but there is only about 1/8" on the passenger side. I rammed the axle in many times but that's as far as it goes.
Is this normal to have a bit of difference between the 2?
Is there a groove in the inside of the splined end of the shaft that seats it on the diff output shaft snap ring?
Should I hear a definite 'click' when the axle is fully seated?
There is a snap ring in the spline that must be compressed to get the shaft fully seated. It is hard to explain but I found sliding it on until the ring contacts and pulling back about a 1/8" to get a running start helped seat the shaft. If you can easily slide the shaft back off, it is not fully seated.
Are you absolutely sure the snap rings were on both diff shafts? If you had the old shafts out or new shafts, possibility that there is a snap ring on the inside of that shaft, making it slide to the point where one s/ring on the shaft of the axle is hitting s/ring on the diff. Yes there is a groove on the inside of the hollow axle unit, to recieve the s/ring that is on your diff shaft. One other thing, see if you can get a light up in there & see if the s/ring is still in the diff shaft. If not it could be just laying on the inside of the axle shaft, or slid further into the diff, causing you a probllem. Let us know how all turns out. If all checks out on this, maybe you can adjust the cradle a tad from side to side ?.
