Default Which cam to get

1999 FRC engine with 65k miles on it. It is my DD. Looking to gain some power (25-50 HP)and I like how a good cam sounds. Only mod on the car so far is a set of borla stingers. Reasonable price is a big plus to.

Planning to add an LS6 intake, TB and maybe some heads if I can find some at the right price. I would prefer to just be able to run with the stock heads for now. If I need new springs so be it.

Driveability I could give up some but not a lot.

Thanks for the info.

You'll need springs for any cam (imo) worth the effort of installing.

I'm assuming a 6spd, you need to specify what you're looking for (high end power, low end torque, how much drivability you're willing to give up, etc). There's a lot of variables in there

I'm very happy with the LG cam I just installed. Cam choice all depends on your power goals.

I have a MS3(237/242 .609 112LSA) from Texas-Speed. Great mid to high end power, but not much low end.

I dont see headers on your current mod list or on your to do mod list. Youll need them to make the most of the cam. An engine is an air pump for all intensive purposes. More air in, needs more air out. Also consider an underdrive pulley while its apart.

As mentioned before, you really need to assess rather this is your only mod or if this will be part of a build. If cam only and you want somewhat decent gains, I would go with a custom grind. Check with a tuner, determine where you you want your power gains (low, mid or high). Remember it is a give and take proposition if it will be your only mod. But hey, you can always change it out (as most do)!

The more cam you put into a car the more aggressive it will be to a certain degree. A nice cam that falls in the middle would be like a 224-230 or a 228-234 all cut on a 113-114 and just under 600 lift.. And you will need a good dual spring, a C5R timing chain and we would suggest a Mellings oil pump as well..

My experience...I just installed a 224/230 .585/.595 113. I also added new stock 243 heads I found on "thee bay" for $600. Added dual springs, LS2 timing chain and a hi-vloume oil pump, etc.

Makes great power. 416 hp/392 tq on a loaded Mustang dyno. Mine is also a DD. Idle park=900 Idle gear=750 Nice lope at idle. Car shakes a little at idle too.

I would give somebody at EnglandGreen a call and they can steer you in the right direction. I went with there "Kitchen Sink" Whiplash II kits and completely love it. Also, I agree with 81c3 on the headers. You'll get the most out of the cam.

Just to give you an idea of rwhp, I had install CAI, LT headers, and an aggressive cam and made 422rwhp.

I've got a new GM Hot Cam kit with springs I'm selling for $375 shipped...

It's a mild cam that sounds great, drives great, and will pick up some nice power.

There are some bigger cams out there of course.

I agree that an underdrive pulley is a no brainer since the balancer is off anyway for the install.

Chris, ECS.
What would a setup like you are mentioning cost with install? Ball park.
