What's fair in California, may not be considered fair in Kansas. What does that $1000 include? What are they charging for labor per hour, head gaskets, exhaust manifold gaskets, coolant, etc ? You can determine what is fair in your area buy soliciting a few trusted shops for itemized estimates.

Like others suggested....call around and get a few quotes but don't necessarily rush your car to the cheapest in town. See who sounds like they care and whom you get the feeling they know what their doing.
Referrals from other local members on the board would be a big plus as well.
Good luck....swap in a cam while your in there if you haven't already done so.
