Sorry, I posted this in the Z06 section, and then later realized that it's probably more appropriate to post it here in the tech section:
Hey guys, first post for me on this forum! I picked up a 2004 QS Z in February to serve mainly as a track car, and have been loving this car ever since!
However, this past weekend, I was driving on the high way. I heard some loud slapping noise coming from under the hood. I few moments later, my power steering went out, and my coolant was overheating. I pulled off the highway and noticed that the belt that runs the water pump, power steering, and alternator had completely let go. I found shreds of it everywhere.
I had it flatbedded to my friend's shop. He took a good look at it and said that the harmonic balancer that's connected to the crank pulley was wobbly/loose, causing the belt to deteriorate rather quickly. Anyone had a similar experience? Know how much this is going to run me to get it fixed? Thanks in advance...
Common problem, balancer is coming apart. Balancer (stock and aftermarket) don't cost that much, it's the labor that will get you, the steering rack has to come out. Do a search on it.

VERY, VERY Common issue. Get a powerbond aftermarket pulley and a ARP Damper bolt and PROBLEM SOLVED! Replacing it is a pain but doable. Like previously stated, the steering rack needs to be removed and the damper presses on and off. You need a puller and installation tool.
YES! It is. There are other dampers but i like this one. The OEM Damper bolt is a ONE TIME USE BOLT. It must be replaced each time. It also has a very specific tightening sequence that MUST be followed for proper function.
Surprised nobody has said it yet, but if you're going through all that work to replace the pulley, it is just another few steps to install a cam. Better to do it when it's already apart for maintenance than go through it all again later....

For me and most C5'ers,,, yea, that is an option and a very good time to stick in a new bump-stick BUT,,,along with that venture comes a LOT of expense that some people are not prepared to absorb.
Like:
-New Springs
-Push-rods
-$500. tune
-timing chain
ect,,ect,,,not to mention the stuff that your going to break once you start playing with the NEW POWER..
In my opinion, it's better to inform the guy that if he has aspirations of more power in the future, and had the money to do it now instead, he should save the $700 + in future labor.
I know I appreciate info like that, even if I don't go for it.
