Default Rear Axle Leak

Need some help on a real axle leak. Have a friend with a 1999 fixed roof that he has to replace the left side seal for the fourth time. Have you any idea for a fix. He seems to think the seal cover might be warped but don't sound logical. Any ideas for a fix because at $250. a try is getting expensive.

Ensure the casing vent is clear and working.

Drive the car until the drive train is up to FULL temp then let the deive train cool. Jack the rear of the car and open the differential fill plug. You should hear a VACUUM release. The case operate under a slight vacuum. The vent allows gasses OUT but NOT back in. If theres no vacuum, thats part of the issue.

If you have to pull the rear,,,heres a couple of post to make things more bullet proof.

- C5, ragtopws6 , Upgrading your C5 rear with C6 Z06 guts, : http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c5-g...-z06-guts.html

- C5, Its Go Time, Output Shaft Install - Left and Right: http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c5-t...post1573407966

If you remove the CV shaft from the rear, make sure theres NOT excessive play in the differential output shaft. If there is, th clutches are shot and or theres too much end play in the differential. That can lead to premature seal wear.

So if you don't hear the vacuum release the seals are bad?? or air is trapped in the rearend?? Sorry for not understanding...

Yes. The heating cooling cycle SHOULD cause a slight VACUUM to occur in the rear-end. If you let the car sit for MONTHS,,,,there would be less than if it were checked with in days of cooling down. You get the hint.

Yep, you should see a vacuum. If it isn't there, the seals could be bad (if you see oil dripping or oil residue.) The vent could also be dirty or defective.
