anyone using the new Mobil 1 Dexron VI ATF? gonna do a diff and trnas fluid change soon and was looking at that. Seems the VI is superior to the III in every aspect and should be a better option
I spoke with Dale at Tremec and he recommended Dexron III or Mobil 1for my July 98 built 99 M6. Manual trans installed at that time were built by Borg Warner which was later bought out by Tremec. The BW trans have paper blockers.
GM TSB states that vehicles previously using Dexron III should now use P/N 88861800 Labelled Manual Transmission and Transfer Case Fluid.
My local speed shop recently installed Amsoil ATF and I immediately began to experience a gear whine when shifting around 3,000 RPM.
So I'm changing to the new GM P/N.
After a second call to Tremec, in which Rob commented that Mobil 1 was better at silencing gear whine, I replaced the trans fluid with Mobil 1 today. After driving about ten miles, it does seem a little better.
I'm sending in an analysis sample to determine if the Amsoil ATF caused any damage. I doubt it since I had only driven about 200 miles with it in the trans but you never know unless you check.

If you hear something only when you are shifting it is most likey the synchros. That isn't good. Synchros use a measured amount of friction to speed up or slow down the gear and if you hear it you probalby have more friction going on that you should. Balky shifting is often the result of too much lubrication between the synchros and the gear. and without the right amount of friction it is hard to shift. Less lubrication can make it easy to shift, but if you don't have the right match, you will see a faster synchro wear.
Standard transmissions, as a result of the synchros have very different lubrication requirements than an automatic. The push for lower fuel consumption tends to result in lower viscosity fluids being specified and sometimes I don't know if that's always a good idea.
As I understand it the Syncromesh fluid was specifically designed for the Tremec six speed so it makes sense to me that it might be worth a try. I'm going to try it in the near future.
