I've got a small longterm leak that collects on the leaf spring on the passenger side, and oozes down the right spring/frame attachment point. I think it's been oozing a little for several years, as I have smelled coolant after a spirited drive quite a few times over tha last couple years. But I just can't find the source. I guess I have to assume it's the water pump seal. Usually, when you have a slowly oozing shaft seal, you get a residue trail from the weep hole.
But even with my mirror and best contortionist moves today, I can't find any evidence below the pulley; and can't see the weep hole.
Is the weep hole waaay up under the pulley? Is there a way to look up in there and spot a coolant trail deposit? Or do I need to pop the pump off to verify?
Thanks, Bill. Yeah, I looked a bit closer, and the weep hole would have to be out of sight back in there behind that big pulley.
I couldn't find any evidence of pulley-slinging though.
Only residue I can find is old, dirty, damp gunk on the spring, AND ON THE BOTTOM OF THE AC COMPRESSOR JUST BEHIND THE SPRING.
Please don't let it be compressor oil! Don't think so, cause the AC works great, and the pulley/shaft seal area and the hose attachment area are both clean and dry. The stuff I'm finding is so old and thick, it's hard to tell for sure what it is.
Maybe it oozed out this winter when the temps got really low, and I'm just now finding it, and smelling it when it gets hot (don't get down under there as much since I went on Medicare).
Gonna do a good cleanup, and see if I can isolate it better before I dig in. Maybe it's the cover on the back of the pump - or a hose clamp (yeah, sure).
