I'm stumped also. I've got the dreaded "service column lock" situation right now. I've read the sticky thread and thought replacing the battery would solve the problem. No luck. It's a '98 A4 that has had the recall done and the steering wheel moves freely. I pulled the #23 fuse for 10 seconds and the #25 is good.

How do you clear this out or do I need to purchase a CLB kit?

Unless the column lock motor functions properly, your going to have this issue. Low voltage to the BCM can and will cause this issue. One cause of low voltage is a bad or low charged battery. The OTHER is low voltage to the BCM from other sources. That source is the IGNITION SWITCH.

The BCM gets power from multiple fused sources. Look in my ignition switch repair post and there I list the IGNITION Powered 12 VDC sources that come from the ignition switch. Measure those fuses to chassis ground and they should be the same voltage as battery output voltage. If there are significant differences between the battery and ignition switch output, that is a possible issue that needs to be looked into.

I didnt think I needed the CLB and got bit when I was at Carlisle.

8VETTE7...I am getting the fuel shut off as well. I'll look for the GM harness and follow your suggestion from there. Any difference in CLB kits? I see several forum vendors sell them. I need to get one ordered.

Thanks for clearing things up on this subject.

it's hard to believe there are still C5's running around without a CLB.

I ordered a CLB and it should be here this week. In preparation I took the knee bolster off to get an idea where everything was and I found the "K harness" but it wasn't hooked up to anything. The connector mounted to the dash has Orange,Purple,Green and Black on both sides.
I cleared the codes, bought a new battery and still can't clear the message(s).

Any ideas?

See how confusing the answers get when you hijack someone esle's thread instead of starting your own?
