Default Noise in left front

I have a noise in the left front. Its like a knocking sound. It isn't constant only happens when turning and than not all the time. I have put the car on jack stands and turned the wheels lock to lock and nothing. I have been under it and checked for some thing loose and again nothing. There seems to be no play when I try and rock the wheel with it jacked up. The only thing I can think is I have a ball joint going bad or a hub. There is no odd wear of the tire. Any ideas?

With the car in the air place a jack under the lower control arm with a board and raise up on the control arm a inch or so. Than check for play at the ball joints.

Also check the sway bar links. These are known to cause noise when worn.

Thanks, I'll check them when I get home. The car has 86,000 miles on it.

I raised the car and checked everything and everything is tight. No play in the ball joints that I could feel. Sway bar felt tight. I'm lost. It is getting worse and I have no clue.

Anyone with any ideas before I take it to the dealer? I'm stumped.

While the car was raised off the ground did you do the jack under the lower ball joint area of arm? If you don't there is tension on the ball joint and you will not be able the feel the play if there is any. Did you check the sway bar links?

Yes I put a jack under the lower control arm. All was tight. I took it to the dealer and they said they found a loose bolt. How loose I don't know but the problem seems to have gone away. Thanks for the help everyone.
