Default EBCM question

Thanks to earilier responses to my TCS/ABS woes. I called absfixer to verify rebuild costs. He told me I could still drive the car without the module on. Anyone else tried this? Any tips about doing this until the module is rebuilt and installed? Thanks

Ken,

No problems driving with EBCM off (just don't expect ABS to work)

The only this I experienced driving with EBCM off was it was harder to turn the steering wheel (like the power steering wasn't working)

That's because the Magnasteer function is controlled by the EBCM.

From the service manual:

The variable assist magnetic steering system MAGNASTEER® varies the driver effort required to steer the vehicle as speed changes. At low speeds, the system requires minimum steering effort for easy turning and parking maneuvers. Steering effort is increased at higher speeds in order to provide the driver with firmer steering (road feel) and directional stability. The EBCM controls a bi-directional magnetic rotary solenoid. The solenoid is located in the steering gear. The EBCM varies the steering assist by adjusting the current flow through the solenoid. The solenoid adjusts the amount of power steering assist in order to achieve a given level of driver effort to turn the vehicle.

Thanks for the input and info concerning steering issues. This looks easy to remove, just a pain in the back. I was thinking of removing the water hose to get btter access, but have heard may problems of folks not getting the colant system burpped correctly. I don't want to go through that headache. Any good tips out there when doing this remove/install? I have downloaded a good diy instruction off web. Thanks

Default EBCM Removal

it is not necessary to remove the coolant hose...just follow the " How to Remove a EBCM" guidelines illustrated in Post #69 Sticky: The Improved***** Ultimate DIY Thread ... *******
...while it is off, secure wiring harness & protect (cover) the BPMV (abs module) especially if you have to drive in the rain...

Six torx scews and two plugs. The module is sealed to the BPMV. It wont just fall off.

The FOUR screws on the very FRONT of the module do NOT need to come out. If you remove those screws, the guts of the module will come out.

When you reinstall the module, add a little RTV to the sealing gasket to reseal the module. It does NOT like water on the circuit board inside.

i had this problem 5 months after owning my ZO6. Me and a friend jacked the front end up and i took it loose via intructions. We put plastice over the prongs and ducked taped them up so no debris could find its way into it. Did the same with the connector. I drove around fine with it like that. Now i wouldnt be trying to race or make long trips or anything but for around town little scoots, you should be fine.

I'm not sure if you saw my instructions, but just in case you didn't, here they are:
