Default Engine oil for C5

hello everyone,

just wanna ask if you guys have any comments on this....
this C5 oil cover says we will have to use Mobil1 oil, but everyone knows Mobile1 is the expensive type of oil...

do you think we can use regular oil and change it every 3000 miles, will it do the same thing as the Mobil1 under normal driving condition? any comments?

Mobil 1 expensive? $23.50 for 5 qt. jug at Wal-mart. Last month they had it priced at $21.00.
I only use what the factory recommends but i am pretty sure others will chime in!

OK, Im kinda new here, so I'll be the first to say it. You cheap a**. You own a Corvette, not a Chevette. By the time you change the oil 3-4 times as often, you will have spent more money.

Honestly, if your worried about a Mobil 1 oil change, I would sell the Vette and buy a Cavalier. That way you can use cheap oil, gas, tires etc........ Cause when **** begins to break or need replacing on your Vette, your gonna freak.

You picked the wrong car to be cheap.

I have a Cavalier as my daily driver and use Mobil 1 in it.

FWIW, I put about 2500-3000 miles on my C-5 annually. The oil gets changed every year, no matter what.....

You could probably change the oil filter every other time @ 3,000 miles, that way you'll use almost one less qt. and one less filter every other time and save even more $$$$$.

you will want to use synthetic oil but it doesnt have to be Mobil1. I use Amsoil in my car without issues.

I believe Mobil One is recommended because there is no room in the engine compartment for an oil cooler. Synthetic runs cooler than conventional oil. If you are just driving around town and not really challenging your engine conventional is probably fine, but putting in M1 and just changing it once a year might be cheaper anyway.

In the long run you certainly won't be saving any money by using regular oil and changing it every 3000 miles! When the synthetic will run 10,000 miles or more!

lol oh boy here we go. Its ok man. You come here to get input. Alot of the guys on here have been here for a while and heard this question 1000x over. Word of advice. Just try the search feature for future reference so we dont get repeat threads as much. Me personally wouldnt use non-synthetic oil. Your just askin for trouble in the long run. I just made the switch from penzoil platinum (been usin it for years no issues) to their Ultra. Waitin to see how much better it is.....

The question is, where is the savings. Just looking at the autozone and o'reilly auto parts sites:

Let's say you buy the house brand 5w30 at O'Reilly, which is $3.29 a quart, and compare that to Mobile 1 at $7.99 a quart. Depending on how you drive your car, the oil life monitor may not indicate an oil change until 15,000 miles (worst case). Based on that mileage, you could spend $55.93 for Mobile 1, or $115.15 using the house brand organic oil every 3,000 miles.

What sounds better to you?

considering that my oil temps have gotten in to the 230's before, There is no way i would consider running non-synthetic

Mobil 1 is recommended because Mobil gives the General a significant price break on the oil and, according to a buddy of mine that worked at Chevrolet until about 7 years ago, pays GM a fee for putting the decal on their cars.

Oh my,another oil question.NO ONE knows what the best oil is.

Lot's of good oil & filter choices out there.I personally use Penn Plat 5-30 in ALL my 3 cars( 96GST,02Z06 & 03S2K) and Wix filters in all too.

I would recommend that you use a quality full syn oil and good quality filter and change both at the same time & often.I have an OCI of 4-5k.

Fluids are cheap.....parts are not.

As always,IMO.
