My 99 just turned 95K on it and recently started a squeal from the A/C belt. I bought new belt and both tensioner and idler pulleys from searching on here and noise immediately went away. 2 days later, I start hearing a bad grinding noise coming from compressor while NOT running A/C. Doesn't get any better or sound any worse when A/C is turned on and still blows nice and cold.
Did many searches and I do know that the clutch cannot be replaced without complete compressor swap. However, is it possible to change the pulley bearing itself? Local parts stores sell a bearing listed for this but looks as if it would be a press-fit.
Would love to press in new pulley bearing rather than complete compressor swap. Can the pulley be removed from compressor? Thanks in advance.
Check your harmonic damper. They are known to loose the bond between the hub and the outer pulley. The outer pulley can come in contact with the front engine cover making the grinding noise if it slips back far enough. Not a good thing to let go for long.
The service manual has a procedure for replacing the clutch and bearing, without disturbing the compressor seal.
However, it requires several special tools to hold the clutch, pull it off, and reinstall it.

Maybe these, or equivalent, would come in one of the eBay universal compressor tool sets, but you'd never know until you bought it and tried it out. Regardless, the compressor would need to come out to do it - a pretty big job.
The available Delphi compressor replacements are made in Korea these days. I just installed my 2nd one in a week. This one cools but is kinda noisy compared to the original made-in-USA one.

Good luck.
Thanks a lot. I will look at it as soon as my new service manual arrives and determine if it is worth it.
Check with Autozone. I think you can get a reman. compressor for a couple hundred bucks. They aren't too difficult to do. Should take 2-3 hours. Water pump needs to be removed.
