Default oil filter c5

Hi all, my manual states this model should use a pf44 oil filter, i was at walmart to get oil for the truck and decided to go ahead and get oil for the vette, I purchased mobile1 then looked for the pf44 filter and they didn't have it so I looked it up in the cross reference book hanging off the shelf and that booked shows a pf47??? Is that going to work?? I did not buy it not knowing because there is nothing worse than returning an item at walmart.
If there is a better filter out ther please let me know, thank you. This is my first oil change on a vette

It takes a PF-46 Delco. Our Wal-mart sells the PF-46E which i don't like. Autozone sells the PF-46. Compare the 2 and you will see what i mean. I only use what the vette engineers use and recommend, AC Delco.
Oil and filter changes are Easy on a vette! Good luck.

Thank you Rebel 1, on second thought the wal mart book did say pf 46 and wal mart only had the 46E. I will get one tomorrow at Auto Zone. I was surprised at how small the filter is. Thank you again.

Your going to get alot of "this is better than that" with your question. I use Mobil 1 and Mobil 1 filter in my Vette and my Hummer.

I use Wix oil filters in all my cars. The 02Z takes the # 51042.Wix is used by a lot of Nascar race teams and is a good balance of filtration & flow.

As always,IMO.

I change the oil & filter in all my cars every 4-5k or so.IMO,trying to get every mile out of fluids is like trying to get every mile out of a tire.

I like the safety of clean fluids and since I have a service log on every car I have owned the last 20 years,it makes selling it easier.

As always,IMO.

I've been trying Royal Purple filters and seeing good indicators. Oil pressure is slightly higher on the gauge both at idle as well as max than my Delco filter was showing.

I don't like their oil, but the filters have nice specs on filtration as well as flow, and they're made in the USA.

Cost and availability are limitations on their utility...$14 and only at PepBoys.

I saw a right up on one of my other forums about oil filter quality and it looks like ACD went down hill recently, cheaper materials used compared to older ACDelcos's. I will look for the thread.

K&N, Mobile 1, Wix, Purolator where all good construction and qualitly intenals. I have been running Purolator Pure 1 and Wix filters ever sence.

Default Oil filters

I use Wix and K&N also, not suprised at ACD quality, wonder where they are made? I was servicing my cooling system recently and tried to buy a therostat made in America, no luck so I tested the one in my 03 and it was fine so I'm still using it. Now I'm wondering where Wix filters are made?
I think 4000 to 5000 miles sounds good with Mobil 1 as it is expensive, seems like Mobil 1 should last a little longer than conventional oil but I know you still get moisture and acids in the oil too.
Thanks to all of you on the forum for a world of info. saving me time and money on repairs. Ron

IMHO, the key to oil change intervals is whether or not you get the car FULLY WARMED UP each time you drive it. This includes the oil, and GM included a oil temp gauge on the DIC, for our convenience. If you're doing a lot of "short hops", your interval shouldn't be any longer than conventional oil, cost notwithstanding, because you're not cooking off the accumulated moisture...

For me, especially since I retired, I only put 2000-2500 miles on the car per year. It gets changed annually, no matter what.

Default Oil changes

I'm retired too so when I go for a ride it isn't to the market two miles away it's usually to the beach, mountain roads or going to see my Mom 3 hrs away.
I have changed the Mobil 1 twice in 11000 miles of driving and I think I will change it again fairly soon.

I like Mobil 1, but for half the price and with the same/similar efficacy being given by Puralator's Pureone filter I have started using that.

In regards to the oil intervals. My 01 manual states 15k mi or one year. That coincides with Mobil 1 EP oils. I do however change every 3 months because it makes me feel good, I drive it hard, and it's my DD (20k+ miles since March this year already)

Concerning some Misinformation on Delco filters.....

The AC Delco PF-46 is the Same Excellent filter it has always been. It is Available at the dealer and some auto parts stores. Wal-mart sells the PF-46E which is shorter and doesn't have the "beefy" end plate as the 46. It fits the same and works, i just prefer the PF-46.

I use Delco filters Only on All of our cars and trucks including all of my Restorations. In my experience and the Independent Information i have studied on oil filters there is No Better Filter than ACD. To me just because something costs more Does Not mean it's better.

Delco filters meet All The Vette Engineers grueling specifications. If there was Ever a problem with Delco filters you can rest assured there would be a TSB on them. Every new Vette that leaves Bowling Green has a Delco filter and they are "made in the U.S.A."

So what is the difference between the PF-46 and the PF-46E? Since the original part number was PF-44 and then superceded to the 46, I just assumed the "E" was just another part number change. If there really is a visible difference to the negative, I'll stop buying the filters from Walmart. Probably should have switched back to the Wix anyway.

As far as oil is concerned I haven't been using Mobil 1 for a long time. I either use Pennzoil, Quaker State or Royal Purple depending on my whim at the moment's notice. I usually change my oil when the DIC says in the area of the 50% left to change.

Take a PF-46 and a PF-46E and compare the two. It will be obvious. The 46 is longer and has a Beefy End Plate where as the 46E does not. I keep about 6 or 7 PF-46's for our '02.

Same as the PF-48 for our '09. Strong with a beefy end plate. Both the 46 and 48 filters are Excellent with the same innards as other more expensive filters.

The C5 and C6 engineers use and recommend Mobil 1 as it meets or exceeds All requirements including the GM 4718M standard. That is good enough for me as that is all i use.
