Hey guys i have a 1998 C5 A4 coupe with 145k miles. The car is basically stock except for simple bolt ons and a shift kit in the rebuilt tranny.
The car has been weird lately ever since i changed the fluid in the transmission and the differential. the car has a tugging feeling when off the gas (coasting) or on the gas very slightly...if i put the car in neutral the engine rpms bounce around and it also does it slightly when in gear as well.
UPDATE!!!
Hey guys just got my car from the shop after putting in a fully built tranny, new torque converter, and a 3 rib 3.42 diff...the car still does the tugging/ pulling when on decel and the engine rpms still bounce around when put in neutral...i am still getting crappy gas mileage as well...what could it be? should i change out the MAF?
I can't think of anything transmission related that would cause that in neutral. My first guess would be the MAF is fluctuating and causing it. Otherwise it could be a bad throttle body I suppose.
i just cleaned the MAF with MAF cleaner about 1-2 months ago. i clean it every time i clean my air filter. i can clean it again i guess, couldn't hurt. i do not believe any vacuum lines are loose as i just replaced the oil pressure sensor and i checked all the vacuum lines. they are all in good shape.
i dont have any codes related to that...

I thought of that too, but I usually see a vacuum leak make it race and not surge. Unless it's a vacuum source that has something to cycle it on/off. That would do it.
Well in neutral you've decoupled the rear end and most of the transmission. The only thing driveline wise I could even guess at would be if the converter was doing something odd to vary load.
the tugging/surging gets worse as the car gets warmer. when it is cold it doesnt really do it but once it gets to full operating temperature its gets kinda bad. this car is a DD as well

It's a possibility. Someone with some more expertise with an automatic tranny will hopefully chime in with their take on it. Remember, coincidences love to pop up. Just because you did some maintenance on the transmission/driveline doesn't mean it has to be the problem. Good chance it is, but I wish I had a dollar for every time I got bit by a coincidental problem.

ok hope so thank you for the help... is there any way i could take the vette to a shop and they can determine if the converter is bad?
Hmmmmmmm,,, You stated that you changed your tranny fluid. Did you get it to the correct FULL level???? How did you fill it? Check the tranny fluid level.
If it is LOW, it will cause issues and tranny life will not be very long...
Did you disconnect anything electrical? Fiddling with the battery cables can cause issues. Voltage Regulator can cause issues. Anything that causes the computer to be slightly off voltage or not enough voltage to the coils -> plugs for enough fire at idle.
I'd definitely check fluids/mechanical stuff (Don't you have to fill while/after running to fill the Torque Converter? - no exp with auto tranny) as suggested before troubleshooting electrical, but just a thought.

yes i did change it but i didnt know about it having to be between a specific temp. so i can just jack the car up level and check it?

all cables and fluids are all perfect...i did a complete overhaul a couple months ago...i changed every bit of fluid in the car, cleaned out my radiator, recharged my ac, fixed my oil pressure sensor... the car seems to start to act up after i did the tranny and diff fluid. but im not sure
and yes you have to have the tranny between 2 temperatures running and i believe you have to put it through the gears to pressurize or stabilize...i dont perfectly know it off the top of my head but its along those lines.

Also guys the car is getting **** poor gas mileage...i used to get 28-32 mpg all day long free way now im getting 20-24 mpg freeway...should i just take the vette in to get the tranny fluid changed, along with the filters and gasket?
i never changed the filter just drained and filled
I'd change the filter and refill again, noting the amount of fluid the owners manual states for this. Since you think your issues began with the trans that would be where I would start, it could just be a coincidence but I think your low on fluid.
