Default H/C suggestions

Need some ideas for a Head Cam combo for an LS1. I have AR headers. Callaway CAI, LS2 Throttle Body and Fast 102 intake. I am not racing just want to play with the Street Rod boys here in town. May take it to the strip just to see what it will do. Talking to a couple different race shops but I want to hear from people that are using the products.

What are you looking for? Low end or mid/top end power? Rough idle or sleeper? Is the car a DD?

I want the low end torque with a good mid range. I like to hear the car and a lope when it idles. No this isn't a daily driver. I am taking my time and researching options. I want to end up with a Corvette street rod. I am thinking a cam that will work with some bigger heads. Possibly 215 AFR Heads then a gear swap and clutch upgrade. I am going to have to do this a little at a time.

SNL v3 cam(~224/230 113) would make good all around power and have a nice lope to it, stage2.5 TSP heads will get you within 10hp of the trick flow and save you some money for the new clutch you'll need with the extra power
Let me know if you have any questions, Chris

FWIW I installed a cam that is similar to the one suggested above. I have a Comp Cam 224/230 .585/.595 113. Excellent low end TQ and pulls hard. Dynoed (Mustang) at 416 rwhp/392 rwtq. It has a sweet sounding lope to the idle. Idle rpm is 900 Park; 750 Gear. In gear, at a light, it will jiggle your S.O.'s tigglebitties.

High lift cams require yearly maintenance, depending on how many miles you drive. Be prepared to replace valve springs periodically.

Talk to these guys. They did my 06 A4 GTO. I didn't want a stall convertor. I did the VRX3 cam. Fast 92, pulleys and long tubes with exhaust.

If you have the money, go for either the TFS 215 or AFR 205 heads. With a small to medium sized cam, like you are looking at, they won't offer a lot more power than a good ported factory casting (with a large cam they will pull away from the factory castings). However the numbers don't tell the whole story. The TFS and AFR heads make their power with a much smaller intake port. Which increases port airflow velocity dramatically. This results in much better driveablity and better low end response.

My previous heads were stage 2 ported 241's that made 427rwhp/390rwtq with a TR227 cam. I'm now running a Futral F13 and TFS 215 heads (haven't gotten the car to a dyno since I got this combo dialed in). I can say I would pay the premium for the TFS heads again based on the driveability and low RPM performance alone, let alone the higher peak numbers. Launching the car with the ported factory castings on street tires was an exercise in frustration. The heads wanted to launch above 3.5k RPM to avoid bogging (airflow was stalling) and the tires couldn't take it. The TFS heads do not have this problem.

The other thing to consider is what if you decide you want more? The aftermarket castings are the only heads on a 346 I am seeing break the 500rwhp barrier. Still if you lack the funds, a good ported factory casting will make a huge improvement.
