I plan on replacing my stock C5 shifter with a C6 shifter. I know that the base on both units are the same externally, but are they the same internally? If I replace just the shift & keep my C5 base, will I get the same results as if I replaced the shift & the base from a C6? thanks, paul.
The "box" is the same. The difference for awhile between the C6 vs C6 Z06 shifters was that the latter had solid bushings that held the "box" above the torque tube (like the C5 vs C5 Z06 shifters). The coupe/convertible came with rubber bushings to reduce noise into the cabin from vibrations.
If I'm not mistaken, the latest version C6 and C6 Z06 shifters come with rubber bushings for all models. I'm not sure about the aluminum shift pattern cap on top of the ergonomic ****. Those were different at one point to differentiate the Z06 from coupe/convertibles. It was only a minor cosmetic detail.
For the price of a complete shifter assembly including the "box", you're getting brand new parts that have no wear and a new plastic bushing at the end of the lever. Some people prefer to buy the complete assembly. And fwiw, some people have broken the plastic bushing during R&R.
