Default Over Heating Problem

I am starting to have overheating problems with my Z. Driving home tonite it went all the way to red. I put the heat on full but did not really do much with it. On its own it went back to normal, after jumping around a bit? Do I have a thermostat problem or a water pump problem. It was low on water but not to the extent it would over heat. Any help from you guys will help as I have to fix it myself as I cannot afford to take it somewhere.

Take your time and pull the radiator out....its really not that hard.....then clean the ever living hell out of it....these things will pick up very tiny pebbles over the years as well as lots of dirt that compacts, you will probably have to get a metal pick like dentist use to get allot of it out.....thats step one....since it just happened rather quickly I would go ahead and install a new thermostat and refill with all new fluid. Those are the two easiest things to do first....the water pump is not hard to remove and replace but its not allot of fun. Dont try and skimp and try to power wash the stuff out while its still in the car....it wont work...Im the king of skimp

Do you really think it is just a dirty radiator? Man I hope you are right. How do you clean a radiator? High pressure hose after taking it out? Where on these motors does the thermostat reside anyway?
Thanks for your help!

Clean the space BETWEEN the AC Condenser & the Radiator and then flush out the condenser fins and radiator fins with a high pressure water hose on full stream. You will be amazed at the sand and dirt that comes out,

I would also change the T stat. Nows a good time to install a 175 deg stat. 160 if you want to use that temp.

I seriously doubt the water pump is bad. Is a welded impeller on a shaft. If its not making noises or leaking coolant, its good.

Im not sure what is going on with it. I will do what you say. Do I need to pull it apart to do that. Where is the thermostat at anyway?
Thanks for your help!
