okay, I replaced my EC driver side mirror a couple months back. popped the old mirror out of the housing, and after a little effort got the new one popped in. i have the memory option, and lately I have noticed that I get in the car and the mirror has moved down. so I re-adjust, hit the memory 'one" button, and that does no good. cuz I can get in the car later and the mirrror has moved down again. so I re-adjust the mirror, this timing hitting memory "one", memory "two" and even hitting them both to fill all 3 available memory possibles. still no good. yesterday, the mirror had not moved down, it had moved UP on it's own. I checked the memory pins by moving the mirror to the extreme left and they seem installed okay. and now that it has moved up and down on its own, I quite sure the memory pin is not the problem.
I'm only having the problem with up/down axis, the left/right or in/out axis is fine. any help appreciated. would it help if I unplugged the correct fuse or disconnnected the battery, pulling power to the memory?? allowing it to clear???
I'm having a very similar issue with my '97. Mine just happens to go left or right not up or down. I'm about ready to set it where I want it and unplug the mirror. It's beyond frustrating.
My '98 coupe does this too, but not every time I start the car. I've always suspected that it is an electrical wiring or ground issue, but I have yet to find the problem.
I started a thread about this a long while back as mine does it own thing when I close the door. I am thinking it might be the door module as I get a U1106 code.
I've got the same issue on my 03Z. My mirror always moves DOWN though.... I used to think it was some sort of "reverse assist" feature that the car had (since the first gear I usually engage after I start the car is the reverse gear), but I guess it's a gremlin. It's only mildly annoying, but it would be nice to fix if someone manages to track down the root of the problem.
I really never noticed it before I changed the mirror out cuz the mirror was so bad/unuseable. I guess I can look thru the code history. any one try pulling the fuse??

Gary,
OK, went out and pulled a few different fuses (mine is an 04 vert by the way if it matters). Nothing changed.
The weird thing is my windows work fine, door locks work and mirror controls work....its ONLY the mirror position for the drivers side that doesn't work on Memory.
Telescopic wheel memory works, fan speed memory works, etc all on Memory just drivers side window messes up. Mine too tries to run itself to an extreme and actually will start clicking as it runs so far out.
Maybe its not my Door Module but something in my mirror Looked through the repair manual but nothing jumped out at me on first glance. And even though my mirror still acts up on Memory, the door code has not returned.
Puzzling......
EDIT TO ADD: Pulled the switch control panel on the door as well to make sure connection was good and it was.

the back of my keyFOB has the number 2 on it. it's the only key FOB I got when I bought the car this last Feb. so I locked the car with the keyFOB, then unlocked it. Memory 2 lite is on, flashes like it's supposed to, goes off. I got the mirror, seat set where I want them and hit memory. last nite, no problems.
how many key remotes came when the car was new, and if I want another, do I just order a number 1 keyFOB??

If you want it to say 1 on it, you'll have to specify. But it doesn't affect the memory. When you program the fobs thru the DIC, the order you program them decides which is one and which is two. You could program two marked number one and the second one will still be number two in the memory settings, if it was programmed second, etc.

I agree as thats what I did with mine. Got one with the car and had to buy an extra when I bought the car as the previous owner didn't have it. Reprogrammed both and they work perfectly for everything. They both reset all the saved features....just don't reset the mirror correctly.
Mine and most other club members C5's have done this from new,I don't think there is a cure.
rebel,
Thats what I am hearing but there has to be SOMETHING we can do? With some of the things folks have figured out here, there has to be a way to fix them. Thats it, its now my sole purpose in life!!!
Each mirror has a FEED BACK potentiometer (POT) for each direction to tell the memory module where the mirror is and where to move it to effect the memory position. IF, that POT is not working correctly, the motor will continue to drive till it maxes out or move to a random position.
You will need to examine the POT for each direction and make sure that it has a linear resistance thru out it range. I will look for the door mirror schematic and try to post it here.
Something that I found out that worke is to manually move the mirroe thru ALL of its positions FULLY UP, DOWN, LEFT and RIGHT several times to free up the motor and clean the POT wiper.

Bill,
Is the POT a replaceable part or is it all part of the mirror motor assembly like I am guess it might be?
It does sound like cleaning or "reindexing" would work as with mine it will travel outward, then stop and if you hit the Memory button again, it will continue outward in the same direction. Its almost as if the signal is not being sent back saying the mirror is moving in the wrong direction?

You think GM would make it that easy????? NO,, you will have to either clean/repair the pot OR get a new drive mechanism from another mirror

Well, one can only hope, right?! It was actually my bday yesterday so I was hoping you were going to post me a present saying it was.... Rats!
So the question is, do you know a spefic procedure for cleaning it or it is a just disassemble as best you can and clean?
BTW, funny we were discussing the battery as mine actually died yesterday....but at least it died in the garage. So I sprung for an Optima (my gawd those are not cheap!) But it does start now and actually easier than before. Now it even starts so quickly, I don't even know I am turning the key before it turns over!
But the damn mirror still has a mind of its own...
I have a busted c5 mirror somewhere,,,, and I will see if I can find it and detail a fix.
Without actually having it in hand and actually seeining how its constructed, I would say that you can pop the mirror out, remove the motor assembly and see if you can see the feed back pots. If you can, a good spray with some plastic safe contact cleaner and moving the controls thru their full ranges might be enough to make it work again.
If you cant, you will have to do some careful detailed disassemblyand then clean the pots.
