In your opinion..c5 or c6? Is the transmission really that different, did the technology change that much? can I get in an 05 for the same price as an 04?...these are all issues a dealer threw at me recently. Opinions?
I recently asked a lot of those same questions. I sold my 98 coupe and was looking for something different. The C6's were appealing due to the tech upgrades (interior, engine, etc), but in the end i decided to go with a modded c5 z06 instead. The main reason was because the c6's, especially the base models i could afford, feel very much more docile to me. This z06 is a BEAST and it has a much more visceral feel when driving it.
Hope this helps. Best of luck in finding your new toy
Firstly, if you are looking for a C6, get a ’06 or newer, especially if you are looking for an Auto. The ’05 still has the 4 speed, not the 6 speed Auto.
The transmissions are basically the same internally. Transmissions haven’t changed much over the last few decades. The primary difference is that oil control is now done by solenoids and electronics. Of course this has been the case for some time now.
What are getting better are the types of functions that are being done, not so much mechanical parts that make-up the transmission. Additional planetary gears are being added to increase the number of forward gears.
The newer style transmissions with paddle shifters are pretty cool. Six speeds with manual control and no clutch, NICE! I now dealers don’t like test driving Vettes, so I at least recommend driving a Camaro with an auto.

I think the 06 would knock me out from a pricing standpoint...trying to do this with 25K??? any thoughts?
I have both a '99 C-5 and the '07 C-6. Both have their likes and dislikes. Frankly, you can't go wrong with either one depending on your wishes/expectations.
I had a c5 1999..lost it in a bad business deal. Really liked the car. I have been told that the technology changes in the C6 are well worth it..I like the idea of auto manual (paddles) is that available on 05/06?
They're basically the same platform cars (same chassis, suspension design, drivetrain setup, etc), just refined in almost all areas. They're more C5.5s but there's really very little that wasn't improved to at least some extent. Just wish they had an FRC body style for the C6....
