It's easy enough to put a floor jack under the control arm each corner and lift up just a bit, then stick blocks or whatever under the tires so that the suspension isn't at the end of its travel while the car sits. Probably unnecessary, but I always do it just because the car looks so sad with things sagging down. Kinda like my last girlfriend.

The general consensus is to split the difference 50/50. Get most of the weight off the tires but still allow them to sit on the ground so the suspension isn't fully extended.
The only item that is taken into consideration is usually the springs. Well, I really don't think the springs will increase in the tension as a result of "hanging", so feel free to set the car on stands for as long as you like.
Not sure why anyone would think it would damage or otherwise provide for negative effects.

It's not the springs that suffer. It is bad for the shocks to be distended with the weight hanging on them. Google is your friend.
Is all the weight on the tires, like it would be sitting on the ground?
Yes and no. All the weight is on the tires, which I figure is the best way to lift a car (assuming you're not working on the suspension). But it's better than being on the ground since the tires are on a curved foam surface instead of flat concrete. So the likelihood and severity of flat spotting the tires should be significantly less. Although leaving it this way for several months might not be a good idea. My car is rarely lifted for longer than a weekend.

Incidentally, when it comes to my head, I think I'd prefer a flat spot to a bald spot.
