Lost a key and understand their is something called VATS that I need to understand to get a new key. Sorry for the dumb question but how do I find out what number is imbedded in my key?

You have to measure the resistance of the pellet. Based on that value, you can order the correct key:
I went to a local locksmith. In the shop they had GM VATS keys and could measure the pellet and cut the key. The head of the key does not have the same shape as the original, but for $16.95, I just needed a spare. It works fine.

Any GM dealer. Bring car title (it has VIN) and ID to prove ownership. They can then cut the correct key for you.
Thanks for the responses. Yes, I still have one key or I would really be SOL. I had no idea how to measure the resistance and am glad a locksmith can do it.
You should be able to find a locksmith in Roanoke. If not, I got mine measured and cut at Hawkins Lock Shop on Fort Ave. in Lynchburg. As I said in a prev post, the head of the key is not the same shape, but the key DOES work.

I'm pretty sure you just set your meter to OHMs and then touch one lead to each side of the pellet..

Once the number is known, you can buy an identical GM key (same size, same design with bowtie emblem, etc) on the auction site for cheap ($14.99) and take it to any locksmith to cut the teeth to match your other key. That's what I did when I wanted to replace one of my old, worn keys.
I took my #1 key to the locksmith and he cut me a new key for $25.00 and gave me a #2 used fob for $20.00.I'm very happy I didn't have to go to the stealership for much more $$$$
What range do you have the DVM on? If you have it on the K range, you need a #13 vats (7,430 ohms). If you are measuring 743 ohms, your vats key is not reading right or your DVM's are off.
