I was looking for a 1/4 inch spacer (preferably local since I hate waiting for things) and I found a price range of $10 to $150. They all seem to be a 1/4 thick ring of Aluminium with holes stamped in them. Anyone know why there would be that much difference in pricing for a non-mechanical item like a spacer? also any advice on where to pick on up in East Dallas?
I can't help you on the pick up, but I run a 1/4" spacer with my ccw's and 315/30/18's on the rear. There's nothing special about the metal, probably just a marketing gimic like the guy on here touting titanium lug nuts as a safety mod. As long as the bolt pattern is correct, no sense in paying a corvette tax.
The material used is the main reason for price differences. Some are cast aluminum and are a universal fit(low end), others are billet aluminum that is cnc'd to size (can include hub centric collar and anodizing).
Is the less expensive product less reliable? I think the vehicle use would have to be part of the decision.
I would try a good tire shop or custom wheel shops.
I ended up talking with a guy who made both the cast aluminum universal ones and CNC machined billet ones. He talked me into the CNC machined ones. He wasnt sure how any of them could be $150 as his are machined direct to the vehicle (hub centric) and had a tolerance of like a billionth of an inch or somthing. He also advised that the cast universal ones are typicly not as flat as the CNC ones. in any case they were only $25ea for him to CNC them.
the hub centric collar ones are more expensive and i am not sure they are worth it. But I would difinetly get Extended lug nuts so that you don't loose any thread securing your wheel to your hub.
