Tell me if I'm right or wrong. The C-6 shifter with the attaching plate can replace the C-5 shifter. Don't want to change out the whole shifter box. The C-6 shifter has a different thread than the C-5 (9/16-18), therefore have to use the C-6 ball or aftermarket ball? Will the C-5 boot fit with the C-6 shifter? Is there enough "meat" on the C-6 shifter to run the C-5 9/16 die down the shaft over the C-6 threads? Thanks for your help.
All shifters from '97 to present in C5 and C6 are essentially the exact same construction and will interchange. They're all stamped steel and rubber isolated. The basic difference is the lever angle and manner of **** attachment and the boot.
The C5 used 9/16"-18 threads for attachment of the oem **** or any after market offering. The C6 used no threads on the lever itself. The oem ergonomic **** has no internal threads. Some EBAY sources offer modified ergonomic C6 ***** with 9/16"-18 threads tapped into it. The oem C6 lever has a flat surface at the end of the lever to position the **** correctly and a threaded hole on the side of the lever to attach the ear of ergonomic ****. Some companies offer HURST type ***** which will apparently mount onto the oem C6 shifter.
The C5 vinyl boot will work with the C6 shifter if you do a minor modification at the top, releasing some of the stitching to allow it to fit. There's plenty of past discussions on the subtle modification required to make the oem vinyl boot work with the C6 shifter. Many buy an after market leather boot.
Some have successfully applied threads to the C6 shifter lever to allow for any **** with 9/16"-18 threads.

Hall, while you're in there, you should pull the shifter box out and clean & grease the rods/bushings. I found that made more difference than anything on my 10-year-old shifter feel.
Since it comes with the entire shift box when you buy it from GM why wouldn't you install it that way? Very simple install (I have done several) and I found if you turn the boot inside out, undo the glue at the top where the boot overlaps and then push the C6 **** into it an o-ring can be used to keep it in the groove on the C6 ****. Gene Cully sells the entire kit (shifter and ****) as a package.
I love my C6 shifter. Buy it from Gene at GM Parts House. Install the complete shifter with box and you will love it. I really like the C6 ****, it just fits my hand perfect.
As much as I like my KIRBAN Shifter in my 02 ZO6, I have never found the need to use anything different in my 06 Coupe and 2011 Grand Sport. The C6 Shifter works excellent.
Yes, it will bolt to your old box. MAKE SURE that you examine the rubber bushings that the shift box uses for mounting isolation. They frequently deteriorate.
