I am burning a quart of oil every 1400 miles or so and am considering having the "rings replacement surgery". If you had the ring replacement done and have put enough miles on your car to measure post-new-rings consumption, please vote in this poll.
Re: Rings replacement POLL - did it work? (gkc501)
I am right here as well. I have started my "documentation program" to be in position to get the rings done if I want, but I am not so sure that I want it done. My engine is doing great other than eating some oil. Muy miles are so little that I'm at 1 quart per 3 months or so but that is still between 1200 and 1400 miles. If you have an A4 like me - it comes from running in 3rd all the time.

Re: Rings replacement POLL - did it work? (gkc501)
Had my rings replaced in November. Since then, have about 3500 miles on the car and not quite down a quart. Sure is a lot better than 1 quart every 1200 miles that it was before the ring replacement.
Re: Rings replacement POLL - did it work? (gkc501)
I got all puckered up after reading the oil consumption problems some C5s were having here on the forum... and then I read the TSB and got even MORE worried. So I began meticulously watching my '99's oil level (she's got 22K miles on her now). I had the oil changed earlier this week @ 4K and she was down just a hair less than 1 qt. And that's with some spirited driving, and several WOT runs up the interstate late at night. One quart for 4K is definately within my comfort zone. I'm just curious why some C5s have that problem and others don't, although they all apparently received that offending, mis-engineered #2 ring.

My 99 goes oil change to oil change with no need to add oil. I go about 4500 between oil changes. Guess like all things mechanical there are vast tolerance differences in manufacturing or construction.
Re: Rings replacement POLL - did it work? (AFVETTE)
I had my 2001 Coupe re-ringed for oil comsumption of about 1 qt every 1000 miles. The dealer did a nice job, car was clean and had no problems after the work. My car still comsumes oil, but it is within the tolerance that chevy claims to be acceptable. Before was using about 1 quart in a 1000 miles, now about 1 quart in 2200 miles.
