Don't think it can be completely avoided. Just adapt a plastic hose/tube to shop vac and clean afterwards. You can stuff some rag pieces in lifter areas and other places you are concerned about while cleaning.

I just went slow and inspected and cleaned the block after. The bigger issue, I was very very very careful of the lifter bores yet final inspection with a boroscope showed a couple of pieces of dirt in the oil gallery.
