I'm wondering how many of you are running deep gears. I already activate the traction control just about every day and I have a feeling that with 4.10's it would be a lot worse
I'm kind of on the fence on getting these (especially since my hours just got cut back at both jobs and I'm job hunting), but this seems to be the best bang for the buck. With the few things I've done to increase the power so far I don't think there is much else I'd want to do to get more power out of it, but deeper gears would certainly help to get it up into the higher end of the power output area.
Crazy fun on the street and almost a must if you want to run quick times (NA) at the track.
You'll turn a bit higher rpms on the highway, but it's not obnoxious at all
just my opinion.
What he said, I have bolt on's and aside from LT's by far my favorite mod. There car feels awesome with the 4.10's and is what go me in the 11's with bolts ons! I still get 31mpg's on the hwy with the cruise on 80.
Just make sure you dont plan on going FI down the road, I am contemplating a blower in the fall and the 4.10's are probably gonna be a little much

4.10s here... the biggest regret I have is that I didnt do it alot sooner! I used to have to mash the throttle to hit it hard..now I just have to lean on it to get the same effect. It makes 5th gear a passing gear and 6th usable in town. 2nd and 3rd are alot more fun depending on the speed your doing. Gears puts you in the power band quicker
Got em, I have mixed feelings about them. The car definitely gets out of the hole quicker, which I like. I shift more, which I don't like. Also, the car seemed to pull harder at speed with 3.90's, and especially more with 3.42's. I have a LOT of other mods though, and have zero experience with gears and a bolt on car.
When I had 4.10s I loved them. If it wasn't for road racing I would have kept them. I find I shifted less with 4.10s cause I could skip gears or cruise in a higher gear and still have power. Probably comes down to driving style.
When I went to bigger hp I dropped down to 3.73 which was another great match. Eventually because of what I use the car for I drilled back to 3.42s but if the car was ever going to be a street car again the 3.42s would come out.
I have 4.10's with my mn12 and I wish 1st gear weren't such a blurr.
My favorite is wringing out 3rd, 4th gears together, feels like the car wants to fly....
City driving I use 1-3-5,6 and its still quick.
All I've done so far is the ti cat-back, a set of GMPP wires and the Vararam. I'd like to do a Z06 intake and maybe a set of B&B shorty headers. I'm in California so I can't do long tubes.
As it is, I already skip gears just because it's so smooth and torquey. I realize I could end up shifting a little more, but it still won't be anything like my MR2 was. That had 4.53 gears with 23" tires and a 6-speed.
legman, that's an interesting point about 1st gear. I'll keep that in mind.
If you dont have a Z you wont have to worry about 1st gear being as short.
do you plan to take it to the track? if so i would get the hardened shafts while your in there.
I learned the hard way....got my 4.10's in and did my break-in miles...so i went to the track and on my second run broke my left output shaft.
I'm keeping legman's comments in mine since my trans seems to have problems with the 1st and 2nd synchros. I think the original owner (not the 2nd owner that I bought it from) didn't know how to drive a stick very well. If I end up having to tear into the trans, I was thinking of just getting a Z06 trans for the improved gear ratios. Maybe with 4.10's I wouldn't need to go that route and could just repair this trans when the time comes.

Yes from what ive read in the past, a Z06 trans with 3.42 diff gears in reality has a final drive ratio of 3.90 or close to it.
Under normal city driving, there's a slight difference between 3.42s and 4.10s. I found that what was 2000, 2500 rpm gear changes are now at 2500 rpm minimum.
And until I learned better throttle control, WOT in 1st gear was just a blurr.
Do I regret having 4.10s......no way, I love mine...
What about when you have a cammed car? I have a Torquer V2 and of course the headers and all the other bolt ons that go along with a cammed car. I know you have to try to match the gears with the power band of the cam for best results. Are the 4:10 too much or would 3:73 or a 3:90 be better?
Not rying to hijack, just didnt want to start a seperate 4:10 thread.
I have a MS4 in my car and it gets you in the powerband FAST! so you dont have that feeling of low torque down low....4.10s are perfect for the bigger cams..
I have 4:10's and also love them. They make normal driving so much more fun. No more clutch chatter on take off. I don't shift any more, in fact I shift less. I will shift 1-3-5 or 1-3-6 a lot of times or 2-4-6 from a slow roll. I can use 6th now around town. Best bang for the buck and they don't require any special maintenance like lifter springs when you do a cam.
