Default Pinning an ATI Balancer

I have an ATI Balancer thats going on my car soon and i purchased a crank pin kit from a member on this forum. The crank pin kit that I bought isnt specified for an ati balancer, do I need a pin kit that is specified for an ati balancer?

Perhaps you should have asked this question before purchasing the pinning kit. You should ask ATI whether or not they recommend doing this to their balancer. BTW, why are you pinning it, are you planning on installing a supercharger in the future?

Most of the time you do not need to pin the balancer unless you plan on big time horsepower...............

Does your balancer have a key way cut in the bore now?
And what type of pin kit did you buy?

And I bought a regular pinning kit that a forum member sells on this site.

Not having installed either I'm not 100% on this but I believe there are two main types of pin kit. The horizontal bore kit attaches a disk with a hole in it to the face of the crank after the OEM style balancer has been installed. The second type is a vertical bore into the top of the crank before the balancer is installed. The pin is fit into the crank and the balancer keyway is lined up with the vertical pin. Since the ATI has a keyway I think the vertical bore is what you need.

You need the ATI kit, not the end drill kit. Also, you need to follow the instructions and make measurements as sometimes if outside the interference tolerance (in the instructions) you may need to hone the hub. ATI can do this if you need it.

Don't follow LS1HOWTO for removal/installation methods.

Just curious. Why can't you use the end drill kit?

I think you probably could . The balancer is keyed, but our cranks are not.

That's what I was thinking, but vettenuts is pretty thorough about doing his homework, so I was wondering what the reasoning was behind his statement.

I suppose you could if you misaligned the end pin with the keyway in the ATI hub and there are no interference issues with the ATI hub and the drill kit fixture as the ATI hub to crank snout end measurement is different then the stock unit. However, one nice feature of the ATI is the ability to rebuild the unit. End drilling, with a press fit, would make realignment during a subsequent installation very hard as the pin is a line fit. This "could" require drilling a new pin hole if the alignment couldn't be accomplished.

If you use the ATI kit, you can remove and re-install without issue. Also, the ATI kit does allow you to install two pins, but a second keyway needs to be machined into the ATI hub. ATI will do this if you return it to them (there is a fee for this service). They will also hone the hub if the interference fit is out of tolerance.

Thanks for the reply. If I understand you correctly, if the ATI unit was rebuilt, it would probably have a new hub. To reuse the existing pin location the pinning tool would need to be aligned with the existing half cylindrical hole, and you would be trying to drill the other half of the hole in the new hub which wouldn't be easy to do.
I'm thinking that if you had it rebuilt, you could probably drill a new pin location 180* from the first one, but you probably wouldn't want to do that more than once. What are your thoughts? I know you prefer the ATI kit, but I already have an A&A kit.

I thought about getting that horizontal pin kit when I did my dampener.

I went with the perpendicular pin in case I ever decided to replace the dampener with a different brand I wouldn't have to try to get in there and drill another hole.

I've still have my ATI kit if anyone happens to be interested in it.
I have no dowel pins, but they are just standard 3/16" diameter pins you can get at McMasterCarr for about $9 for 10pcs.
