You might want to try it without the tool first. I found the tool to be more of a PIA than a a help. Just press the tabs together by hand. (this was on a '98)
I got mines from the local Autozone in a set of three different colored anodized aluminum pieces. It works fine on the stock line. It gave me grief on an after market AN adapter.
I've seen what looks like the same thing from several different manufacterers. The brand I have is OEM.
the only thing I could find was a set made of plastic. they were cheap but actually worked. Id have bought better if I could have found them but its fine since they work and I wont be changing a lot of fuel filters.
I've found technique to be more important than which tool you use (as long as you are using the right size). I've only done a few but find that just shoving the tool in and pulling is usually frustrating. You might even break something if you are too rough. Insert the tool without too much force, then push/wiggle before pulling to try and separate. Works for me.
I went to a a friends heated garage with several other vette owners. We were all going to do some work. One of my task was to change my -02 Z fuel filter. Murphys Law says that you will forget the tool,, .. Murphy was right!!
Well, I made my own tool out of the little red protective cap on the new filter. It doesnt have to be a fancy tool. Just something to release the little brass fingers inside the hilter connection..
SECRET METHOD! Before you insert the tool,,, "PUSH IN" on the fuel line! This will release the fingers inside the filter connection. Slide the tool in and then pull on the line. It should easily pop out.
Good luck too ya! I bought a plastic one amd broke it! Tried for about 1 hour. I ended up cutting the line off. Hopefully urs comes off haha.
After cutting the line off I noticed why, all the prongs inside were bent down and the platic tool couldnt get under it
Great I'll check it out, 'X tool' is that what it's called?
It looks like this
one end is 5/16" and the other 3/8". You close it over the single fuel line goward the engine and press it in to release little clips in the filter neck. You dont need to press invery far to release it, I didn't know I had it until i bumped it and saw the line was free. The back two fuel lines from your tanks are easy, use your finger on one side and a long shaft screwdriver on the other. You have to remove the plastic clips and reuse them on the new filter.
Don't forget to release the fuel pressure before you start. do it at the schraeder valve on the front of the drivers side fuel rail.
I have pictures if you want them
Order your filter from rockauto.com, its $33 + $5 shipping
These are the links I used to walk thru it
