I've seen LS6 heads going for about 400 used. A new cam will cost around 500 bux. Add a tune for 500, and then some of the maintanence items you will want to do while you are there and that's another 500. So for 2000, you would be adding around 40-50whp.
Of course when viewed in the scope of the total price, it kind of doesn't make sense to buy used LS6 heads. I think patriot has a stage 2 head/cam combo for 1500 that I've seen put out over 420whp.
Here's the results I got from relatively cheap DIY mods:
Last year 345rwhp, 357rwtq with LG Street headers, X-pipe, hi-flow cats, and Hallech Stinger CAI.
This year, 357rwhp, 367rwtq by going with a Vararam & Power Duct, and ported and polished throttle body from Bare Essentials.
Interesting point: though I "broke in" the Vararam after installing, and drove for 3 weeks before the tune to let the car's computer adjust, I was DOWN 8hp from the prior year's tune. If you put on a Vararam, get a tune! And if you're in SoCal, use Charlie @ RPM in Santa Clarita--he does a superb job!
Just make sure you don't set yourself up for failure with any future mods you may want to do. If you're going to spend the cash, you might as well make sure you don't have to "re-buy" the same parts to marry them to a setup you didn't plan for.

So I recently picked up a c5 and im absolutely new to that era vette and ls1 motor. So i was wondering, would a new air intake, cam, and exhaust be a good combo for some cheap horsepower?
