Default Official LS1 oil capacity?

Hey guys, I searched around and have read that guys put 5.5 - 6.5 quarts in for an oil change. I think the owners manual says 5.5 quarts but someone had mentioned its a mistake?

Just a little confused, and was wondering what the official correct number is.

Thanks!

Both my 2001 and 2004 manuals say 6.5 qts with filter and 6.0 qts without filter. I use 7 qts with filter all the time.

+1... Just make sure to lift the rear a little at the end of the draining process to get all of the used oil out...

Which owners manual are you looking at?

My 2001 owners manual says it's 6.5 quarts with filter change. (Capacities and Specifications on page 6-75)

Default Do not over fill your oil

Never put too much oil in your system. As a matter of fact, less is better than more. You never want your crank coming in contact with excess oil. It slows the engine down and can cause faoming in your oil. Put in 5 quarts and some into your filter before you install the filter. Start the car and check for leaks and add oil as needed. I repeat, do not over fill.

I put it 6.5 start the engine up let it run for a few minutes shut it down and wait until the oil drains back into the oil pan.I check the dipstick and top it off as determined what the dipstick reads

Less is not better than more, when it comes to your engine. Oil capacity is 6.5 gt and if racing 7 qts is perfectly acceptable.. Oil Life algorithms are based on 6.5 qts. Baselines where changed in 2000 from 10,000 miles to 15000 miles. Baselines are the starting point for oil life percentage at 100 %. At 5 qts. you are 1.5 qts low.... not a good cold start suggestion... true that over filling is a no no... most people who change their own oil know how to remove the oil. Filling the filter is also common knowledge for most oil changers. I would never suggest anyone put 5 qts in their LS1. For me.. I put 6.5 qts and 1/2 pint in the filter. Its what I do with that extra .5 qt, of the 7 qts I use in a oil change.. you can't get a whole pint in the filter but if you did it would be fine.

Every time I change mine I drain for a long time with the rear raised some and remove the filter. I then fill the filter and finish silling the crankcase with a total of 6.5 quarts after which the car is run to check for leaks. Inevitably I end up adding the last 1/2 quart as the dipstick always is down 1/2 quart when I check it later.

the oil pan is so wide unlike the older design that 1/2 qt is not going to raise the oil level that much in the pan.

Guys tracking run a full qt over
