Default durability of engine block c5?

Hello there fellow gentleman and ladies!

In the past two weeks, my car is parked 15 kilometers out of my city, in a secure, locked place. Reason for that, is: Water pump for my Corvette C5, first registered 14.6.1998, started to leak after i parked my car - Leak was so big, whole coolant went out in about 5 minutes, directly from the water pump location.(water pump is coming tomorrow)

So, what are the options if the car block actually starts to crush off? and since my coolant leak was so big at water pump, i was starting to worry if there is anything else then just water pump to this since we didnt start to remove water pump. if everything works out well with this, i might want to know for future if the block is damaged what to do.. can it be welded? and if its even in a location that it would have to be removing the engine out, in that case it might even be better to swap with a new engine and you have no worries..?

sometimes i really regret buying the car...

Ok, first your post is very hard to read. Please proof read a little before you reply. But let me get this straight. Someone at work said that since he has not seen your car in a while, the block is probably damaged? You then said that you drive it every day. Then you alluded to the fact that you need a new water pump and you are worried that the block may be damaged near the pump? First, if you need a new water pump stop driving your car or you will overheat it and yes you will damage your block from that. However, just needing a new pump wont crack the block. Worry about stuff that matters and actually happens a lot like differential leak, seats worn out, door locks stuck, windows stuck etc.

did it freeze and crack? that's the only way I could see a block cracking while a car just sits somewhere. Or a big leak could always be a rat that climbed up and chewed through a line.

no, i was driving, quite fast.. about 2-3 milles parked the car, and was steaming out of hood, and coolant started to leak.

my question is still about the durability of engine block and how hard it is to be repaired.

Did your engine overheat? Most likely it is just the waterpump. Perhaps a hose busted, which is why you lost all your coolant so quickly. Don't worry too much about it. Corvettes are well designed cars!

yes...what johnnyzvette said. BUT...check all hoses when you do the pump. Worst case scenario you overheated and blew a head gasket...then its just a good time for a nice set of heads, camshaft...etc.

First of all, please excuse the rudeness of some of my fellow forum members. Unless you drove the car a long way after all the coolant was gone and it overheated, there will be nothing wrong with the block on your car. Did you check the temperature gauge to see if it was in the red zone and for how long ? Just install the new pump, check all hoses and fill with coolant. You should be fine.

Thanks Tony !

To the OP, the heads and head gaskets will go before the block but the block can crack the cylinder liners if abused enough. Get the new waterpump on and see what you have. Head gasket replacement is not a big deal on these push rod motors. No overhead cams to deal with.

BTW: It's always interesting to see how near universal Corvette appreciation is. You're a faily new member here - welcome. How did you get into Vettes? How many other Vettes do you see in Slovenia? Tell us the story.

Thanks,

Kevin

Thanks for the kindness and help everyone.

All help i can actually get is from this forum, alot of mechanics here are afraid to repair these cars, even things like waterpump, not alot of these cars in Slovenia all you see is ''tunned' hondas with oversized exhausts, making annoying sounds.

For me corvette was always a super car that i will never have. there are quite a few corvettes in my part of the country i live in, theres a white C5 for 2 years now(owner is woman and she told me how long she has it), my silver C5 for about 2 months, and people said there is a black C6 they seen here, i didnt see it yet but its pretty fresh i guess.

first time i saw in person a corvette, 1 year back. it was a red one, i had an old audi a4 there back. my dad and i were looking at it, i said ''my dream is to have a car like this'' though i was like.. i know i can't have it..

i have a full time job now, and times changed..

A hose is the most likely failure to make it leak that badly.

It might not be a bad idea to put water in it and see where it starts to come out. If you can not find the leak then you should check the oil for water and pull the plugs and turn it over to make sure water isn't leaking into the cylinders.

I agree, check your hoses, more likely to have a major gush of antifreeze from a split hose than a water pump. Water pumps generally start to weep/drip, not spew coolant. Good luck, there are a lot of extremely knowledgeable folks here very willing to spend time to help you ( as well as other members, of course) anytime you need it.

It could very likely be a hose. If it is the water pump, I think he's thinking that it's like some other cars where the back of the pump is faced directly against the block. The LS1 is not designed that way so there is no danger that the pump damaged the block from the bearing going. If you didn't overheat the car, replace the hose and or water pump....and off you go!

The LS Engine is a very sound design. They take a LOT of abuse. Recommend refilling the block with plain water after the repair to make sure that you have repaired ALL the leaks. If the leaks are repaired, drain the block and refill with the proper mixture of DEXCOOL Antifreese and distilled water.

DO NOT use the green coolant!!

Here are some pictures of the front of the engine disassembled:

Just to give you an idea of whats inside. Heads Cam up-grade project.

I beat mine hard and it never complains!
