I have read most (if not all) of the previous threads within this forum on this subject.
I return home to NW Montana from Afghanistan in early July and I have made arrangements for the purchase of a 08 3LT M6 coupe.
NW Montana is very scenic and the roads are winding and undulating, an excellent playground for this vehicle without having to exceed speed limits (70 mph) or otherwise operate outside (at least mildly on rare occasions anyway) the rules of the road.
However, a front brake lock-up on these roads is NOT an option.
While reading the many threads on this forum concerning the Steering Wheel Position Sensor and the potential for this sensor to send an incorrect position signal to the Active Handling system resulting in a front brake lock-up, I have not only become concerned, I am considering cancelling the purchase.
I have an idea on how to eliminate the possibility of this potentially catastrophic event occurring. I would appreciate any and all feedback on the feasibility of my approach, especially from members with technical expertise in electronics and on the AH system of the car itself.
1) Improve the consistency of the SWPS signal; Hard wire the SWPS. I believe I read this in a previous thread and agree with the reasoning given within the post.
2) Isolate potential signal from the AH to the front brakes; Disconnect the wiring at the front brakes and hard wire in the appropriate electrical resistance so the AH does not react to a change in circuit characteristics. I am assuming that an electrical device located at or near the brake caliper is triggering operation of the brakes. Please correct me if I am wrong.
My goal is to eliminate all possible AH operation of the front brakes without otherwise interfering with the functionality of the system on the rest of the vehicle.
Has anyone tried this (or similar) approach? If so, what were the results?
Has anyone tried a different approach with the same goal in mind? If so, what was your approach and were you successful?
Does anyone know the electrical resistance of the device that receives the signal from the AH and triggers the operation of the brake caliper?
Any other related technical feedback?
I am trying to cover the entire scope of the subject in this initial post, so I apologize for the length and multiple questions/feedback requests.

Purchasing an early to mid year C6 comes with a chance that you could experience this issue. The EBTCM affects ALL FOUR Wheels and can individually control each wheel.

There is NO way to electronically isolate the front brakes without doing surgery on the EBTCM. The signals that effect single wheel or multiple wheel front braking come from the STEERING WHEEL POSITION SENSOR and the two accelerometers Yaw and forward accelerometer.

If the EBTCM sees an error in steering wheel direction (car is going straight but,, SWPS sends out an erroneous signal that you have the wheel hard right),, it’s going to lock up or brake very hard the left wheel to help get you back to the correct direction!

That’s exactly what’s going on in a nut shell! I’m sure if it was that simple, it would be fixed already but, having experienced ACTIVE HANDLING ISSUES on my 06, I can see part of the issue. Here’s a picture of the sensor harness/ connector. Notice how short the harness wiring is!!! When the telescopic wheel moves, it disturbs the delicate pins inside the connector. The tie wrap is my attempt to help stableize that harness.






The red thing is one of GMs attempts to resolve the issue.


I re-bent the small pins in the SWPS to make better contact in the harness connector and it seemed to resolve the active handling messages and issues.

I personally believe that GM is negligent in not resolving this issue. I purchased an 11 Grand Sport and pray that this issue is resolved or I’m lucky enough to get a car that is not affected.
