My 01 has been acting up this year and has died a few times recently with the last time resulting in a tow to get it looked at. They found it to be a fried crank position sensor which has now been replaced.
They are blaming it on the heat from the headers saying it could happen again in the future since the headers are real close to where the CPS is. I have LG Street long tube headers.
Anyone else had issues with this or know whether it is a common problem? Any recommendations on avoiding repeating this costly repair in the future?
Hmmmmm,,,, Dont know how LG Header tubes are routed but,, I have stainless works headers on my 02 Z since 04 and I have NEVER had ANY wiring issues. That sensor is on the block and the wiring should be routed close to the block in a plastic covered loom away from any exhaust stuff. Unless it was misrouted or disturbed from its origional location, i find that statement hard to digest.
If your worried about it, find some heat shield fabrick and tape it on the wireing run.
How is the car running since you changed the sensor---Who changed it ?? Reason being is anytime the CPS is replaced you MUST to a "crank position sensor re-learn procedure" --so your ECM can communicate correctly again with it---Anyone with EFILIVE--HP or a TECH II can do it-
Ask if they did one---especially if it seems like its running off some--
From: Dear Karma, I have a list of people you missed.

Hmmm, first time I've heard of this. I have 1 7/8" Kooks and no worries. I agree with BC, maybe some wiring had been misrouted in the first place, but that's a wiring issue, not a sensor issue. Have you checked the repair to see if they repaired/replaced any wiring or the connector?
Thanks for the feedback guys. I got the car back from the shop yesterday and drove it for about an hour and a half last night. All seems well but this was an intermittent problem before so the jury is still out. I'll have to get it on the hoist this weekend to check out the wiring. They did not mention replacing the wiring, just the sensor. They also mentioned something about having to manually calibrate and complaining about the rev limit missing in the programming. I have a message in to my tuner to ask about that.

Well I checked with the shop and they said they couldn't do the re-learn procedure because of my tune. What exactly is this re-learn and are the steps documented anywhere?

Doesn't make any sense---can't think of any reason why they can't--even if it was a speed density or an open loop tune--should not matter--
Could be that the person --that originally did your tune "locked it" which means no one else but THEM can un-lock your ECM to do any reflashes---
However--the relearn is not done with the tuning software --but instead it's done with the "data logger" software-
try going to a shop with a Tech II----you can find what the re-learn is and how its done by going to the EFILIVEwebsite and look for it in the tutorials--
Again the re-learn just re-alligns the sensor to the crank-clocks it correctly---Required when changing the sensor---or replacing internal parts such as the cam or crankshaft---
