Yes, If you don't have the gearing to match the cam.
My MS3 was a DUD in the mid range and didn't take off until 4rpms with stock 3.42 gearing, and it pulled like a raped ape up top. BUT, my custom cam hits a helleva lot harder in the mid range and pulls just as hard up top as the MS3.
What times did you run at the track with your MS3?
If it were your car in my situation would you put the ms3 back in? I would love to do a custom grind but I didn't have my heads flowed and really just want to drive the car. I think I have driven it 4 or 5 times in the last 5 months due to my trans breaking and not this whole cam fiasco.

Based on your post, it appears you do not feel it is possible, that the tune could be a problem......
I don't think its the tune. If it pulled to 6500 rpms I would believe it was the tune. A bent valve is possible I guess but the car ran fine with the ms3, unless the whiplash bent them... I was going to do a compression test tomorrow. If cam timing is off it will give me a bad reading also. I could bore scope the cylinders to see if the valve hit the piston. I turned it over by hand before I started it an everything was fine.
The reason I say check compression is when I had my 00 SS I installed a 237/242 @ .608/.612 on a 112lsa, but we didn't notice the crank gear being off by 2 teeth. Cranked over by hand just fine but when we started it up for the first time it ran like crap and would back fire thru the intake. Pulled the heads off after doing a compression check and I managed to smack all 8 intake valves.

What was the PTV clearance when cam was installed? Did you measure it?

In all honesty, if you're looking for an off the shelf cam and dead set on an off the shelf cam for an optimal performing street setup with stock 3.42 gearing, I'd sell both cams and get a G5X3 because it'll have the highest DCR and make more power under the curve than both cams. If ur looking for the highest dyno numbers then fine tune ur whiplash cam/tune. If I were you, before I started tearing the car apart, I,d drive from austin to houston and have EG work their magic. Besides they would know their own cam the best and would more than likely get better numbers.
I'm going to pull the rockers tonight and pump some air into the cylinders and see if I can hear it coming out anywhere. If I have time I'm going to check the cam timing. I really don't have time to drive to Houston here in the next few weeks. If I don't see anything that will be an option.

I don't think you're going to find anything, if it were a bent valve, I'm sure they would have been clued in to it while it was at the shop.
Change out the 02s and redyno and see what it does.
When my car threw an 02 code, somehow the header burned part of my 02 wire and I had to replace them. Car ran like crap and backfired horridly. I thought I broke a valve spring, but it turned out to be the 02 sensor.
What are your spark plugs gapped at?

I had some br7s gapped at 35 for nitrous but I put the tr55s back in to see if I made a difference. I'm pretty sure theyre at 50-55. The front o2s are new, maybe 100 miles on them.

If it's gapped at .55, that would explain why it's breaking up up top, Spark blowout. Other than that, it just might be the heat/humidity causing lower dyno numbers.
Well I checked compression, all cylinders are at 200psi. I changed o2s and it still ran the same. I ended up pulling the timing cover off and I think it was off a tooth. I looked at it and moved it around for 30 min before becoming confident that it is right. It is really hard to get a good angle with the intake and oil pump on the car. I forgot my torque wrench at work so I will be bringing it home and putting it together tomorrow. I'll post up and let y'all know how it runs.
And thanks to everone especially all motor c5ls6 for all your help!!! I'm really hope it was actually off and I wasn't seeing things.
Well I was putting everything today and I saw this!!!
The grooves are where the crank seal rides on the pulley. I dont see anything wrong with the seal or anything that would cause this. I also dont remember seeing these grooves when I had it apart last week. Any ideas what would cause that.
Well the cam was off a tooth. I got the cat back from my tuner today and it feels really good. It reacted to all changes made during tuning and all the idle issues are taken care of now. It made 469/404. I really wish I would have taken my time and checked the cam timing closer before I put it together the first time. Now I know how a car with the cam off a tooth runs. Lol. Thanks for all the help!!
With the Whiplash Cams that I have worked on, they drive extremely well. I have several 02 Z06's running 1,400 rpm in 6th with no issues. They drive much better that the MS3, IMO.
