Not a good idea..the flush additives release the sludge too quickly and can contaminate the oil to the point where you can spin a bearing. If you end up buying the car, throw auto-rx in it for 1000 miles to clean it out. Stuff is amazing.
I was thinking more like idle it for a few minutes then redo the oil change (this has worked for me in other vehicles). Vs any sort of driving around with additive. That 1st oil change would be a sacrificial oil change (yeah some people dont like to "waste" 40 bucks on oil that they will immediately dump out, but Ive found that its what has to be done in order to do it correctly).
I would not ever recommend putting an additive in and then driving around - there really is too much that can go wrong like the situation you just posted.

Exactly what I did when I did my heads install. I bought 6 quarts of like autozone brand oil and ran the car for 5-10 mins then drained it. I think it was 25 bucks. Didn't change filter until I did the real oil change.
If the car had 150k miles I would be concerned about sludge and it breaking up when switching to synthetic and possibly clogging a drain hole or the pump. 20k mile range and changed frequently? It will not be an issue.
Having said that, I have a '99 with 29k miles and it's worth maybe $15k at best. According to my insurance, my wife's 2007 Pontiac G6 is worth more, and we bought it for under $14k a year ago.
$20k or close to it is a complete joke for a '99. Either come way down on the cost or buy something a lot newer. You can get a 2001+ Z06 for that price.
You are not going to find a '99 with 29k on it for only 15k. KBB value or what the car is actually worth <> the prices you will find on said car. I paid 17 for my 99 frc in april and it has 22,500 on it. That was a BARGAIN compared to other cars I looked at with 30k+ more miles. Most were still over 20k.
General consensus seems to be don't worry about the oil situation if you have to have that particular car, but look for a 2001-up C5 instead of that '99. I agree.
I am only going to say this once. This guy who owns this car is Not the original owner. He has not taken care of this car. We put the Gm spec for oil to this car because it is a bottom breather and is very susceptible to heat shear. And If he only changed the oil once a year, it was probably not enough because its a rare car that only has a change once a year. This guy was up front about Not using the right oil so he knew what to use but chose not too... But then like some of the poster here who know nothing about a C5 or LS1 say oil is oil which just goes to show that you should be very careful about who yo listen too on this forum . Some have credentials to back up their advise and others get it from the grandfather who drove a Buick back in the 60's...
Please.. do yourself a favor, pass on this car.....No telling what else he scrimped on.. like fuel.... or the proper octane... that engine could have been pinged to death and with the wrong oil , just makes things even worse. Knock sensors are there to protect against a wrong gear lug, or a tank of gas because the right octane was not available.. the knock sensors will not protect against low octane fuel on a daily basis..
There is also a great amount of bad information or mis information on this forum... Again , be careful who you listen too...
You will find the right car. Not every car owned by an old guy is a keeper... many old guys havent seen an increase in their cost of living check in three years... we have many young guys here looking for the cheapest of everything.. looking for ways to use cheap oil and regular gas... If those things would work in a C5 we would have recommeneded them, but they dont work...
Good luck on your quest...

Hello I am a new member and I am a current corvette owner. I am in the process of selling my 92 corvette and wanting to buy a c6. I have located one that is owned by a senior who has owned the car for about 7 years. I like the car but he was honest with me in telling me he has not been using the synthiec oil when he gets his yearly oil changes.
The car has 23000 miles on it. If I purchased the car the first thing I would get done would be to put in the correct oil. He is not wanting to sell the car to just anyone as he wants to make sure the car is taken car of..... but he did not put the proper oil in over the years. I am wanting to get some opinions as to whether this is something to be concerned with. It is a 1999 coupe and it is going to sell for 20,000.
I am not that smart when it comes to mechanics so I need opinions. Thanks so much for your help. Rich
Well, I bought the car. He came down a thousand dollars and i knew I was taking it home. The only other issue was the air conditioner needed recharged. Once that was done everything just fell in place. Getting the oil changed tomorrow. I have alot to learn about corvettes and I am so glad that I found this fourm and you folks have been super. When I look back..... I joined this fourm on Wednesday and posted my concerns..... I sold my 92 vette on Friday and purchased this one on Saturday. It would not have happened if were not for you guys stepping up and making me feel comfortable about what do do with the oil. thanks a ton and I will be a regular reader of the ton's of information on this site. I just love the car and it has wayyyyyy more power than I ever expected. It will be in the family for many years. Thanks.
Blackie, if you paid $19K for this 99, you paid a lot!! You should have read the comments here before moving forward with the purchase. Especially the comment from post #26 above!! You'll like the car, I have a 99 and love it comparred to my previous vette's. As long as you are happy with the purchase and the car has no problems due to the wrong oil being used??

appreciate your comments. He did however Put on new corvette chrome wheels that cost 1200.00 as well as a new corsa exhaust as well as other chrome items. I realized the price but when I figured these items in and the condition of the car. I was ok with it. I have been looking for a vette most of the spring/summer and everyone wanted way too much for cars that had 50-60 thousand miles on them.
I just really felt this was not that bad of a deal. If I would have paid two thousand dollars less and then put these items on later I would have had about the same money invested in the car. I do appreciate everyone's thoughts and this forum really has helped me a ton.

If you are happy with it then that is all that matters. Good Luck and enjoy.
