Default Help! High pitched whine

Reposted from General Forum:

I have a high pitched whine cruising at 70 mph, 1800 rpm. Sounds like it is coming from the back of the engine, maybe the belhousing or torque tube. If I back off, push in the clutch or take it out of gear, it goes away. Anybody experience this before? Where should I start trying to troubleshoot?

Try it in 5th gear, same engine rpm and see if you still have the noise. If not, it would point to something in the trans. When was the last oil change of trans fluid? If the noise is still there in 5th gear I would be looking at the diff. Any oil leaks back there? When was the last time the oil was changed in the diff?

Not sure when any of the fluids were changed. I just bought the car back in April, however only has 17,000 miles. The noise doesn't sound like it is coming from the rear, but I guess could be traveling up the torque tube. When it is at it's loudest you would swear it was coming out of the dashboard.

Transmission was upgraded to DTE Stage 2 w/4:10 gears and HD output shaft gears about 5,000 miles ago.

Ahh, so the diff has other than stock ratio. If the ring/pinion wasn't set just right it can cause a whine. Direction can be hard to tell sometime with the C5 powertrain setup. The high frequency noises can travel down the torque tube and radiate from the larger sufaces areas, like the front bell housing. Try the 5th gear in place of 6th gear to see if it is diff or trans. If the history on oil changes is unknown if it were my car I'd change the oil so I have a baseline.

Is this a new noise or has it made it since you got it?

Hmmm, better make that 4th gear in 5th your still running through the headset.
4th is direct drive in your 6 speed.

Has this just started? Been there since the gear change? How does the clutch feel? Any differences. Only happens at 70 and 1800 rpm? Does it change with slight pressure on the clutch?

Just started. The only thing that has changed from the last time I drove it, is that I changed out my clutch fluid using the Ranger method. I am getting ready to go out and try some of the suggestions with other gears/speeds and will check with slight pressure on the clutch as well.

With the diff work done only 5,000 mi ago, I would say that fluid should have no problems. Using Redline Synthetic 75/90W w/ls additive.

This is a new noise.

Ok, took it out for a drive again. Looks like the noise starts in at around 45mph (in 3rd gear). Not as pronounced and not as high pitched. Noise is present in 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th. However it is loudest in 6th between 70-80 mph. Looking like something in the differential.

Anyone recommend a good shop in the Milwaukee - Chicago areas for rear end work (diagnosis and repair)? Or, should I look at going back to DTE, being they originally built the current unit?

With only 5k on it I would speak with the builder.
