Default Oil "spoiling"??

Four or five years ago I found a killer deal on Mobil 1 and bought eight cases. I had drained the engine the other day and when I opened a bottle of the oil it had "lumps" in it. I opened another bottle and it had lumps as well. The lumps were whitish tan and the more liquid darker brown part.

Has anyone else ever had this happen? I was concerned enough that I went and bought fresh oil. Any chance that all I needed to do was shake it up and remix it? I really don't think that would be a solution but I still have two cases that I'm going to have to dump.

I'd sure try shaking it up and see what it does to the lumps.

Did you check the Exxon/Mobil (or Mobil 1) website? Might already be a FAQ on this subject. Or, you could post that question yourself. Might be worth a little effort before dumping two cases of unopened oil.

I'd be more worried that the "killer" deal was something funky about that batch. I can't think of anything that would preciptiate out.

Why take a chance?

Was that the "killer deal" that Pep Boys ran? If so, I still have some Mobil 1 from that deal also.....

There are a number of bacteria that will grow in petroleum. It is a REAL issue with Jet fuels. It looks like snot! In my younger days I had the fine job of cleaning an aircraft fuel tanks that had sat for about three months and was taken over by the bacteria. I expect that this is what happened to your oil as well. I wouldn't use it!

send a sample of it to blackstone labs and have them test the oil. see what is inside of it.

I've stored motorcycle oil for years and never had it come down with the "lumps". If it did I wouldn't use it.

This may be what happened. Didn't want to describe the "lumps" quite so graphically but since the word came up, it looked like someone had coughed a loogie or four in the bottle.

I purchased about 4 of the 5qt containers of the Mobil 1 about 3 years ago and used one last week and it looked fine. I like that the large containers have the vacuum seal at the top, I could not remember if the quarts had the same seal?
