Default Where is the ground for the alt.

Having low voltage issues with my alt. Recently had the alt powder coated and now have a low voltage problem. The mounting ears do not have any power coating on them. Any ideas?

Was the unit taken apart before the power coat?

Also... is this a duplicate thread? Seems like I read about something like this after an alternator powdercoating earlier today?

I've done a search on multiple forums. The problem is that i find others with the same problem but they didn't specify what they did to fix the problem. Lucky131969... its not that i don't believe you.. I wanted to get other opinions as well.

At only 11 volts output, as stated on the other thread, it sounds like you have more than a grounding issue.

It's easy enough to check that the alternator case is properly grounded.
There should be no more than 0.5 Ohms resistance, when measured from the alternator case to the negative terminal on the battery.

Ok so far I've check the external contact points (mounting ears). I get .2 ohms when i checked the resistance from the case to the battery. Does the .2 sound right?

Sounds like a diode in the regulator is bad.

Like I said earlier, anything less than 0.5 ohms is good. 0.2 ohms is fine.

You alternator problem is caused by something internal, not an external grounding issue.

Are you going to take it apart and have it powder coated.
